Jeanne goes round and round with her laptop problems
My laptop has Windows Vista, Internet Explorer 7, and Microsoft Office 2007. My dilemma...every time I open my laptop and begin WHAT EVER, I get a message that pops up saying : "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available." I chatted live with Windows...they told me I had to contact the manufacturer of my laptop since Vista came preloaded on it. I called Toshiba, and they told me windows must be corrupt so they had me wipe it out and reinstall with the recovery cds that came with my laptop. I STILL get that message every time I open the laptop and begin doing something, seems to occur mostly when I open outlook and start doing emails. Does any one there have any idea of what is going on? Even though I used the recovery discs...I still get that same message. So THAT didn't help. Thank you so much. I trust you guys too :-) Jeannie

Our Answer
Thanks for your nice comments. You're problem is not an easy one to solve and we know that's not what you wanted to hear.

The Host Process for Windows manages services and their related DLL files. Multiple instances of this service may be running at once under normal conditions. Any program that is not fully compatible with Vista can cause this error. This issue could be caused by different software programs on different machines, it's not the same on every system.

And, this will further make you wonder. You said you "recovered" your computer using the Toshiba recovery CDs. Guess what? Recovery disks restore the system to the way it was when your computer left the factory. And, just because the software came with your computer and was installed at the factory - does not necessarily mean it's totally compatible with Windows Vista. And, therein lies the problem with recovery disks supplied by the manufacturer. There is so much garbage installed on your computer at the factory, you can spend days trying to get it all off.

There is one other thing which seems to be causing the error you're asking about and that is some ATI Radeon Graphics cards. If you have an ATI Graphics card you should visit ATI's Web site and see if you can fine any updated, Vista-compatible drivers for it. Visit their driver site here . The page will say AMD but it's the correct page for ATI Graphics drivers. Be sure you select 32bit or 64bit Vista. If you're not sure which you have, click "Start" and right-click on "Computer" then select "Properties". It will tell you there if you have 32bit or 64bit Vista.

If you don't have an ATI graphics card, then the only other thing you can do is start uninstalling all the software on your computer that you don't need until you remove the one that is causing your problem. Before you get started on this you should take a look at the Windows Event Logs. These logs can help you identify a program that is continually causing problems even though it may appear to run - or it could be attempting to start with Windows and is either running in the background and crashing - or scheduled to start with Windows and crashes during Window startup.

To access the Windows Event Logs, click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, View Event Logs. You'll see a red circle with an exclamation point inside it for every error which occurs on you system. If you note one application causing most of these errors then that's the first application you need to remove. If you remove the program cause most of the errors and you still get Host Process error, look for any other applications which have been causing errors. Be careful, don't remove any programs you really need or which are essential to Windows. If you're not sure google it. If there's a program you really need that's causing errors, visit the Web site of its developer and look for an updated version of the program. If you're using 64bit Vista, make sure the program is compatible with it - and don't install 64bit software on a 32bit version of Windows.

It's a good time to mention our favorite uninstaller - Revo Uninstaller. This will help you get rid of any unnecessary programs completely - without leaving a trail of debris in your Windows Registry the way the program's own uninstaller often does. When you remove programs via Control Panel, you are using the program's own uninstaller - by the way.
