The Top Questions of The Week

A Question from Lola
I have recently downloaded some new fonts and although when I type a letter using them they look very nice but when they get to the receiver they have changed to something else.    What am I doing wrong? Thanks. Lola

Answer
One of the most misunderstood things on the Internet is how fonts work. If you download some new fonts and install them, you'll see them perfectly on your computer. And when you write an email you'll see them perfectly. But, unless your recipient has the same font installed they won't see your font. Your font is not being "changed" it simply doesn't exist on the recipient's computer, so the recipient's default font (usually Arial or Times New Roman) is displayed. Windows will always display the default font when the font specified in the source code of an HTML email is not available on the system on which the email is being read. The same thing is true of those who create Web pages. We have over 7000 pages on our Web sites and most of them specify "Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Times New Roman, or MS Sans Serif" . Why do we only use these fonts? Because they're found on all Windows systems.

One caveat to the above answer: We are aware there are font embedding products and technologies and that the ability to embed fonts in email and Web pages does exist. But it's cumbersome and time consuming to do; and font-embedding techniques are beyond the scope of this newsletter.

A Question from Bee
When I go into a site that tells me I can download in either icons or gif's,why does it always come up in gif's. Can anyone tell me how to download into icons? Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Answer

Icon format ( .ico ) is not readable by most Web browsers. The formats readable by most Web browsers are JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP. If you right click on a file that is showing on the Web that is supposed to be in .ico format (Windows Icon) it will be a link to a target .ico image. Instead of right clicking and choosing "Save picture as", right click and choose "Save target as" and you should get the .ico (icon) file. The only way a Web site can show you what the icon looks like is by making it into an image format readable by a Web browser. In the case of the site you're referring to, the Webmaster chose to use GIF format. I hope this helps you.

This Week's Tips & Tricks!

InfoAve Subscriber Tip Of The Week

Submitted by Linda

Linda's Tip: In Outlook Express you can empty the deleted items folder on exit by going to the Tools, then options, then maintenance and click on the box to empty deleted item folders on exit.   Then when you exit out of Outlook Express all the items in that folder are automatically deleted.

This is a great tip Linda, thanks! And it's a tip that everyone should be aware of because your deleted items folder can grow quite large over time! Just be careful if you're using a spam filter that you have it well-trained before deleting email automatically. Do you have a tip or trick you would like to share with our readers? Windows XP Tip- Easy
(Windows XP Home or Professional)

Remember the old "Clipboard Viewer"

It’s also called the ClipBook Viewer in Windows XP. The ClipBook Viewer shows you the information you have copied to the Clipboard. You can store information permanently in your Local ClipBook and share it with other users. The Local ClipBook opens when you start ClipBook Viewer.

The "ClipBook Viewer" is not listed on your start menu but you to create a shortcut to it on your desktop. It's as easy as A-B-C. Right-click your desktop, choose "New" and then select "Shortcut". In the location field type C:\Windows\system32\clipbrd.exe then click "Next" and give it a name. Now, click "Finish" and you're done!.

Back To Basics

Is it true that deleted files are really not deleted?

Yes it is true. The concept of "deleted" files in Windows is one that is a little difficult to understand, so we've written an article that we hopes will make it a little easier for you and others to understand what happens to deleted files and why they're not really gone from your computer. Please click here to read our article about "deleted" files.
