Charlie has problems playing DVD video
I think I have a question on a subject you may have never touched upon.
At least not to my knowledge and I’ve been reading and appreciating your newsletter
for quite a long time now. I’ve been having a problem playing DVD video disks on
my computer. The sound and video break up from time to time. When you recommended
a free program (RAMRush) a few weeks ago that checks memory usage I installed it
and I thought for sure that it would show me that I didn’t have enough memory (that’s
what everybody always say) since I only have 512MB. As a bonus the program also
displays CPU usage and to my surprise it showed that I’m using a solid 100% of my
CPU when playing video’s on my computer DVD player. I have the same video file on
my hard drive and when I play it from the hard drive it only uses 95 to 98% of the
CPU and the video plays perfectly. I also tried playing the same DVD disk in my
very old DVD player connected to my television set and it plays perfectly. The RamRush
program also showed that I only use about half my memory while playing The DVD disk
in my computer.
When the computer is idle with just a few programs running the background, my CPU
usage is about 10% with an occasional spike to 20% and this is with the computer
on for several hours. I have a VIA motherboard with a Pentium 4 -- 2.0 GHz processor.
I also have 2 New DVD players and both act the same. Any help is welcome, Charlie

A comment from Blair
I just wanted to tell you what a great program
Reimage is. I was running real slow and ran a scan and it found a lot of
problems that were corrected. The a couple of weeks later I could not use my
Windows Media Player. I turned to Reimage and it found a couple of problems and
one of them was my Windows Media Player. I did the fix thru
Reimage and I have my player back with no problems. Thanks so much for
recommending this program. Yours, Blair
Roger has issues with IE 8
I have a question about IE8, I used to like the program but as of late it sits
and "connects" forever. I have read that there are conflicts with IE8 and some add-on
programs, but no definitive answer for why it has become so slow. There has to be
a fix of some kind out there... I tried a download to remove restricted zone files
as I read that this may be a problem that these addresses are force loaded by the
Browser...Please help me , send me some insight to fix my problem... Look forward
to your weekly read...Thank you for your time in this matter...Roger

Net Neutrality
Windows all versions
Two of the Internet / Wireless giants are negotiating this week about Net Neutrality:
Verizon and Google are teaming up to set some guidelines for Net Neutrality. They're
going to making some recommendations to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
as to what kind of Net Neutrality laws should be passed.
A lot of people in the U.S. think
that the government needs to keep its nose out of the Internet. And for the most
part we agree with that. But Net Neutrality is different.

Links not opening? Maybe they
are!
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer
8
We are still getting a lot of email from Internet Explorer users telling us that
this or that link isn't working on our site. So we go and check and the links are
working. Tabbed browsing is great, but it can be confusing if you're not paying
attention to the tabs.
If you use
Internet Explorer 7 or 8, with tabbed browsing enabled, you might not be aware
that by default, when a new tab is created, IE does not switch to the new tab.

Reimage -
Before you call a computer repair tech
or spend several hundred dollars - consider Reimage! In an era when
big companies like Best Buy's Geek Squad spend millions and millions
of dollars extolling the virtues(?) of its sundry services, many
folks with broken computers will simply pick up the phone and call
Geek Squad or another heavily-advertised computer repair service.
It's not until the repair is finished that the computer owner realizes
how Geek Squad can afford all those cute(?) Volkswagens and that
multi-gazillion-dollar ad budget. The shock is the bill -
if you have your computer repaired in your home it will cost $299.95
- if you lug it into a Best Buy near you, you'll pay $199.95. And
what do you get for that much money?
If your computer isn't running well and is in need of repair - READ
THIS before you call Geek Squad or someone else!

Roboform
- What can we say other than this is the first thing we install
on all our new computers? We couldn't live without it and we wouldn't
either. We bought multiple copies of this program - long before
we ever started recommending it. It's the best password manager
you can buy. And if you have 10 or less passwords to say, you can
even use the free version. We don't offer a discount on this product
- but if you decide to buy and you buy through our link, we'll make
a commission and you won't pay a penny more than you would if you
bought it directly from Roboform. So, if you try it and you like
it, buy it from us and help us help you! Roboform is one of our
favorite programs.

This week's Rant
The Case of the Lascivious Lime
There are some very serious things going on in this world, but few of them more
serious than the frightening and immoral plot by a German candy company, particularly
its founder, Heir Hermann Haribo, to corrupt European children. I have to admit,
it's an ingenious scheme. Who would have thought that children in Europe could be
subverted and corrupted by such an innocent thing as candy.
OK, it's not so much the candy itself. Yes, I know candy promotes rotten teeth.
And yes, I know it helps make children overweight. But a little candy never hurt
a kid, did it? What's being a kid without a little candy.
Yes, until now, candy has been pretty good thing; so who would have thought some
evil German genius would have devised such a sinister scheme using candy as a weapon
of immorality?
(And how come so many evil geniuses are German, anyway?)

OOPS!
Backup
Oops!Backup is a backup program unlike any other we've ever seen.
By now you know that we never recommend piecemeal backups - we urge
all our readers to do comprehensive drive clone (or image) backups,
because it's the only way to totally recover from a major computer
disaster without losing any data. But you don't want to run an image
backup restoration just to recover a few missing or inadvertently
changed photos, documents, or other files. It's like using a fire
hose to fill your dog's water dish. I'm so wonderful at examples
:)
Oops!Backup is not a drive image backup program. It's not a piecemeal
backup program. It's not a system restore program. It's ..it's...it's
different. Oops!Backup monitors whatever folders and files you choose
for any changes that are made. It allows you to go back in time
to any version of a file you're working on whether it be a photo,
document, or any other type of file.
What impressed us was the unique, sensible. totally easy-to-use
interface. I mean, how hard is it figure out what "Go back in time
and restore" means? It's so easy to use, even those who are software-challenged
can figure it out -- without ever needing "Help". No help needed
-- but there is help available should you ever need it. And if our
experience with this company is any indication, their customer support
will be superb.
Save 10% now on a program you'll really love and you really need!
