Enabling
Automatic Updating in Windows XP
Windows XP users Note: You
should install Service Pack 1 on your system to obtain the latest Automatic updates
software.
- Click Start --> Control Panel.
- Find the icon labeled "System" and double-click
on it.
- In the "System Properties" window, find the tab
labeled "Automatic Updates" then click once on that tab.
- You should configure your windows to look identical to
this one:
- Check the box next to "Keep my computer up to date.
With this setting enabled, Windows Update software may be automatically updated prior to
applying any other updates." Note: This is the wording used by Windows XP.
- Set the radio button next to the description that says
"Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I
specify."
- Select "Everyday".
- The time you select can be whatever is most convenient.
- Click Apply/OK
If you do not feel comfortable about having updates
install automatically then choose "Download the updates automatically and notify me
when they are ready to be installed."

Automatic Updates in Windows XP
The following information is
for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. SP2 will be released in mid-Summer 2004.
Enabling Automatic Updating in
Windows XP - SP2
Windows XP users Note: Windows XP users must install
Service Pack 2. Automatic Updating is installed as part of this service pack. Service Pack
2 will be available mid-Summer 2004. As of this date it is still in Beta Testing.
- Click Start --> Control Panel.
- Find the icon labeled Automatic Updates.
- In the "Automatic Updates" window, configure
your machine to look exactly like this:
- Check the box next to "Automatic (Recommended)
Automatically download the updates, and install them."
- Select "Everyday".
- The time you select can be whatever is most convenient.
- Press Apply and the OK
If you do not feel comfortable about having updates install automatically then choose
"Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them."
