What do to when Microsoft Security Essentials shows an alert that it’s not running – when it is

We have had quite a few readers write and ask why the Microsoft Security Center shows an alert that Microsoft Security Essentials is turned off, even though it is running normally. Most of the time this happens after a major update, but it can happen at any time.

If this happens to you, it’s easy to fix. This is all you have to do:

1. Open Microsoft Security Essentials

2. Click “Update” (even if MSE shows it’s up-to-date)

3. Let MSE run through the update cycle and when it’s done, the Security Center alert will disappear.

So instead of reinstalling MSE to fix this issue (which some sites recommend), just follow the instructions above and everything will be running perfectly again.

Thank you for that tip – this has happened to me yesterday – I now have followed your advice and everything’s fine again.

I just had this problem yesterday. I discovered that turning off real-time protection, then turning it back on again, solved the problem too.

We have the orange alert from MSE
and we send it through a 1 min. to 1 1/2 min
scan and then cancel the scan and that works too.

Could someone explain why when I click on MS updates and find there is an update for MSE they also include one for Bing? You can’t click on the just MSE without the one for Bing being included. I don’t use Bing or like it. So If I want MSE update from MS I have to download this Bing update too. I then have to go and uninstall Bing. Very tiresome and shouldn’t be bundled with MSE. If there is a serious update from MS why in the world don’t they just install it without this darn Bing included?

Thank you TC & EB, wonderful tip!

Jeannie, on Windows updates, specifically the Bing, just check the box, and right click on it, and it will display Hide this; do so, and your problem is solved.
