Enabling
Windows XP Firewall Protection |
Windows XP Home and Professional edition both offer identical firewall protection. We've seen instances, especially in Windows XP Home Edition where the firewall is not enabled by default. We'll show you how to establish if it's been enabled and if not how you can enable it. First: What is a firewall? A firewall is a device, either software or hardware, that creates a perimeter defense around a network. Using the analogy of a house, a firewall can be compared to the fence and electric gates surrounding a house. If the home owner comes home, they use a transmitting device to send a command to open the electric gates, the gates open and the owner drives their car in. If a friend of the home owner arrives, they ring the bell, and once the owner thinks they are sure the person is who they say they are, the owner opens the gates to allow them in. If you're connected to the internet via a LAN (Cable or DSL) it is very important you protect your system with a software firewall like Windows XP's built-in firewall or one of the many other available firewalls, or both. Enabling Windows XP Firewall: (Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional) Click Start, Control Panel, now select "Network Connections" ( Go ahead and click on it ).
