If you don't see a check mark
in the box next to "Protect My Computer and network by limiting or preventing access
to this computer from the Internet, make sure you put one there and then click OK. That's
all there is to it. You're done. If you want to be extra-safe read the additiona
information on this page (see below) or click

Remember that Windows XP's
built-in firewall only protects your computer from incoming attacks and offers no
protection for outgoing information. In other words some applications may be "phoning
home" (so-called "spyware"). Trojans and worms also can make use of your
connection and sent information about your computer to other computers on the Internet.
That is why we recommend you supplement Windows XP's firewall with a secondary one. Two
free firewall programs you can download are Zone
Alarm by Zonelabs and Sygate Personal Firewall by
Sygate. Both offer free versions as well as "Pro" versions which are not free.
The free versions work just fine for the average home user. After you've enabled your
firewall you might like to test it. You can do this by going to GRC Com's Shield's UP. Click here for ShieldsUP! (It is free).
