How to Clean Your Laptop’s Screen Without Damaging It

There must be 100 tips floating around about the best way to clean your laptop’s screen. Some recommend expensive commercial cleaners or cleaning cloths. But you don’t need any of those. You only need a microfiber cloth and distilled water.

The Dry-to-Wet Method

To avoid pressure damage, streaks, or liquid seeping into the laptop housing, use the Dry-to-Wet method:

1. Power Off the Laptop: Turn off the laptop, unplug the power cable, and let the screen cool down completely. A warm screen causes liquids to evaporate too quickly, leaving ugly streaks.

2. The Dry Wipe (Dust Removal): Gently wipe the screen in one direction with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. This removes loose dust particles. Skip this step, and you risk grinding dust into the screen during the next step, creating micro-scratches.

3. The Damp Wipe (Smudge Removal): Lightly mist distilled water onto the microfiber cloth—never spray liquid directly onto the laptop screen. Wipe the screen gently in circular motions or straight paths.

4. The Dry Buff: Use a dry microfiber cloth to buff away remaining damp trails before they dry naturally.

Rules to Prevent Permanent Damage to Your Screen

Never use paper towels or tissues:

Wood-pulp products (like Kleenex, napkins, and toilet paper) act like sandpaper on a microscopic level and will leave permanent hairline scratches all over plastic and glass displays.

Control the liquid:

The cloth should be barely damp, not wet. If you can squeeze drops of water out of the cloth, it is too wet. Excess liquid will run down the bezel, pool at the bottom edge, and permanently fry the screen’s underlying display matrix.

Never use Windex, Clorox, ammonia, acetone, or ethyl/isopropyl alcohol, as these chemicals will instantly dissolve anti-reflective coatings
