MRT – What it means to me… and you

By | June 4, 2013

This tip applies to Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

If you keep your Windows updated (and you should you know), you have a built-in malware scanner you probably didn’t know you had. Yes, it’s there, buried deep in the inner sanctum of your computer waiting to be commanded into existence by you, dear friend.

If you have kept your Windows updated, then press the Windows Key and the R key to bring up the Run dialog. In the run dialog type MRT and press enter.

You should see this (see screenshot below):

It’s the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool – and most of you already have it. But it won’t do you much good unless you run it. So, run it and see if it finds anything — and it does, let MRT get rid of it.

It’s not the best tool in the war against malware, but it is another tool you should be using. And since most of you already have it, you should run it a few times a month. You just never know what might be lurking in the innards of your computer.

Microsoft is really good at hiding tools like this. I can’t help to wonder why. Anybody have any ideas?

I tried to send via your email page this article to a friend of mine. After two continuous tries, it is still giving me problems and not emailing. The message says that there seems to be a problem and to try again.
    However it does not work.

Use the envelope icon just below the article’s title.

I have already explained that I did use the email envelope icon below the article and it did not work. Now I notice that it has been removed.

The email page icon that was beside the pdf was the one that wasn’t working, which is now removed.
I did not notice another envelope which is between Pin it and Tweet. I have tried that now and “it works”. There was a bit of confusion as to which email icon I was using that wasn’t working for me. All is now in order.
