For those of you who use Gmail, you know that you have to go into Gmail settings and enable POP or IMAP or it won’t work with your favorite email program \u00a0Yahoo does not require you to turn on POP or IMAP – it is enabled all the time. Typical Yahoo. Leaving this open all the time even when not being used to set up mail in a desktop \u00a0is not very secure. That being said, a lot of you use Yahoo, and that’s why we’re this tip.<\/p>\n
Most email programs \u00a0have account setup that work in similar ways. For this tutorial we used Windows Mail for POP3 setup and Outlook for IMAP setup<\/p>\n
We’ve created a tutorial to help you set up a Yahoo account as a POP3 or an IMAP account in Windows Mail and Microsoft Outlook respectively. If you use Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird, you’ll find the set up is very similar.<\/p>\n
First we’ll show you how to set up your Yahoo mail account as a POP3 account. We recommend POP3 accounts only if you will only be checking your email on one device such as a laptop or PC. Or, if you plan on consolidating your mail by checking all of your accounts (up to five) through Gmail.. You can then set up your Gmail in your email program as an IMAP if you wish.<\/p>\n
If you will be checking your mail on several devices such as a laptop, PC, smart phone, or tablet, setting up your Yahoo account as an IMAP account makes good sense. IMAP allows you to check your email from several devices.<\/p>\n
The following shows the Windows Mail dialog for setting up an account. The important things to note are the incoming and outgoing server names, port numbers, and login protocol. You’ll need these to set up mail accounts in any email program.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n In your email program (we used Windows Mail on Windows 10) choose Accounts, Add accounts. In Windows Mail, click Tools\/Accounts and click Add . Next click Email account.<\/p>\n Enter the name you want people to see when they receive mail from you.<\/p>\n If your name is Darcy, you may want to use your nickname here such as The Wicked Witch of the East, or if you wish, you can use your full name: Darcy Ester Goobersnitch.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Next, you’ll be asked to enter your email address, like this:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Four Yahoo Mail (and Outlook.com mail) your E-mail username is your full email address.<\/p>\n You password is your password! How about that.<\/p>\n Now, even though the next window says Congratulations (no exclamation) it’s premature. There’s more to do. Make sure you check “Do not download my e-mail at this time”. If you do, it won’t work, you’ll be angry, you’ll blame us and things won’t be good. So please check that box; we have more to do.<\/p>\n The name you enter in the next dialog will be the name you’ll see when you look at the list of accounts you’ve set up in your email program. If you have several accounts you might want to name them something like My Gmail Account or Goobersnitch_Gmail, Wicked Witch_Gmail, etc. this is so you can tell you Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com, ISP, etc. email addresses apart.<\/p>\n Next click the Servers tab (above) and make sure and make sure the server type is set to POP3 (see below_<\/p>\n Above hopefully can see the incoming and outgoing mail servers for Yahoo POP3 mail. If you can’t they are:<\/p>\n Incoming e-mail server:<\/p>\n pop-mail.yahoo.com<\/strong><\/p>\n Outgoing server:<\/p>\n smtp-mail.yahoo.com<\/strong><\/p>\n Make sure that you check the box next to “Outgoing server requires authentication”.<\/p>\n Now click the advanced tab (see below):<\/p>\n Outgoing mail server (SMTP) uses port 465 or 587 (if 465 does not work for you, use 587). Make sure ” This server requires a secure connection (SSL_”. On newer email programs you will have several security options. Select SSL or Auto.<\/p>\n Incoming mail server (POP3) uses port 995. Again make sure you check the box next to “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)”.biw<\/p>\n Click Apply \/ OK \u00a0your Yahoo Pop3 account will be set up in your email program.<\/p>\n IMAP accounts are great if you will be checking mail with multiple devices such as tablets, laptops, desktops, smart phones, etc. This is (to simplify) because you’re always reading he mail on the server. Once you’ve read it in one device it will be marked as read, but it will still be available to read on your other devices. Hey! It’s the 21st century, right EB?<\/p>\n We did the following tutorial using Outlook, but again you can use the information below to set up a Yahoo IMAP account in virtually any email client on any device.<\/p>\n First you have to “Add Account” . Duh!<\/p>\n Do not use auto configuration for this. Choose manual setup.<\/p>\n Type in the name you want people to see when you send email, See? I used Mister Yahoo. Then enter your email\u00a0address. The account type is IMAP — this is important if you want to set up an IMAP account and not a POP3 account.<\/p>\n Servers:<\/p>\n Incoming mail server:<\/p>\n imap.mail.yahoo.com<\/strong><\/p>\n Outgoing mail server:<\/p>\n smtp-mail.yahoo.com<\/strong><\/p>\n You username is your full Yahoo email address such as DarcyGoobersnitch@yahoo. com .<\/p>\n Then, enter your password.<\/p>\n IMPORTANT: You’re not done. You now have to click “More settings”:<\/strong><\/p>\n Click the “Outgoing Server” \u00a0and tick the box next to “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”. And tick “Use same settings as my incoming mail server” and then click the “Advanced” tab.<\/p>\n Below: Make sure you set up your servers exactly as shown below. Outgoing server port can also be 465. We are showing 587 below as it’s most common. Note encrypted connection settings: Incoming SLL and Outgoing Auto.<\/p>\n Click OK and test your settings. As you can see below, everything we told you above is true and works \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n <\/p>\n We sent ourselves an email from our new Yahoo IMAP account. As you can see below, Mister Yahoo’s new email account is set up and working.<\/p>\n You can set up Outlook.com an Gmail accounts in your email program too. Check with Gmail or Oulook.com for settings. Or wait until we do a tutorial.<\/p>\n Happy emailing. Oh yeah. If you’re going to be using Yahoo Mail, please make sure you use a really strong password.
