{"id":17561,"date":"2019-09-16T12:12:57","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T16:12:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/?p=17561"},"modified":"2019-09-16T12:12:57","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T16:12:57","slug":"windows-10-settings-vs-control-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/windows-10-settings-vs-control-panel\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows 10: Settings vs. Control Panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 24pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\nWindows 10: Settings vs. Control Panel <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Microsoft continues its push to deprecate Control Panel in Windows 10 as it pushes more and more out of the Control Panel and into the Settings app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The first thing you should know about these two menus is that Settings is now the go-to tool for most of the common Windows personalization options, while Control Panel is generally reserved for more complex actions and settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A simple way to look at the difference &#8211; for now &#8211; is this: If you need to change the appearance of your computer, the way your computer works, or view or change your Windows Update settings, then the Settings app is the first place you should go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you&#8217;re looking for more complex settings, such as network, security, firewall, or hardware option, you should check out the Control Panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you&#8217;re not sure whether to look in Settings or the Control Panel, save yourself some time and use Windows 10 taskbar search to look it up. For instance, if you&#8217;re want to change your screensaver, type screensaver in the taskbar search. You&#8217;ll see that the Control Panel is the place you want to go:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2019\/cpanel-v-settings.png\" alt=\"Control Panel vs. Settings - Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" width=\"578\" height=\"232\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But if you want to turn your screensaver on or off, then Settings is where you need to be.\u00a0 Keep in mind, the more general the search the more results you&#8217;ll get. Screensaver is a general search term that gives you several results.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s better when you want to know if you should use the Control Panel or the Settings app, to use a general search term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Available Options in Settings (Windows 10 version 1903)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">System: Display, sound, notifications, power.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Devices: Bluetooth, printer, mouse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Phone: Link your Android, iPhone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Network &amp; Internet: Wi-Fi, airplane mode, VPN.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Personalization: Background, lock screen, colors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Apps: Uninstall, defaults, optional features.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Accounts: Your accounts, email, sync, family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Time &amp; Language: Speech, region, date.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Gaming: Game bar, captures, broadcasting, Game Mode.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Ease of Access: Narrator, magnifier, high contrast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Search: Find my files, permissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Cortana: Cortana language, permissions, notifications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Privacy: Location, camera, microphone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Update &amp; Security: Windows Update, recovery, backup.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2019\/cpanel-v-settings1.png\" alt=\"Control Panel vs. Settings - Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Control Panel Options (Windows 10 version 1903)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">System and Security: Review your computer&#8217;s status; Save backup copies of your files with File History; Backup and Restore (Windows 7).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">User Accounts: Change user account type.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Network and Internet: View network status and tasks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Appearance and Personalization: Taskbar and navigation (opens in Settings); Ease of Access, Folder options, Fonts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Hardware and Sound:\u00a0 View devices and printers; Add a device; Adjust commonly used mobility settings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Clock, Language, &amp; Region: Change date, time, or number formats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Programs: Uninstall a program,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Ease of Access: Let Windows adjust settings; Optimize video display.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2019\/cpanel-v-settings2.png\" alt=\"Control Panel vs. Settings - Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sectionHeadline\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">When in Doubt, Try the Settings App First<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">You can see from the information above that there is a lot of overlap between Settings and the Control Panel. As Microsoft continues to move towards the Settings app and away from the Control Panel,\u00a0 when you&#8217;re in doubt as to whether to look in the Control Panel or Settings, try the Settings app first. But, remember, even in the newest versions of Windows 10,\u00a0 there are still some options that you&#8217;ll only find in the Control Panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And don&#8217;t forget, you can use Taskbar search to save time if you&#8217;re not sure where to look. Just type a brief description of the option\/ settings you&#8217;re looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As Microsoft continues to move options out of the Control Panel and into the Settings app, it has removed all shortcuts to Control Panel.\u00a0 You can access the Control Panel by typing Control in taskbar search. If you want to create a shortcut for the Control Panel on your taskbar, open the Control Panel (as above). When the Control Panel is open, right-click its icon on your taskbar and click &#8220;Pin to Taskbar&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you want as a shortcut to the Control Panel on your desktop, do this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Open Settings<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Click on Personalization<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In Personalization click &#8220;Themes&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In Themes click on &#8220;Desktop icons settings&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2019\/cpanel.png\" alt=\"Control Panel vs. Settings - Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Place a checkmark in the box next to Control Panel&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2019\/cpanel1.png\" alt=\"Control Panel vs. Settings - Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And that&#8217;s it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Control Panel is going to slowly fade away, whether we want it to or not. And the Settings app will continue to grow &#8211; whether we like it or not. But for now, there are still some settings you&#8217;ll find only in the Control Panel.
