We are going to show you how you can take control of the size of the Notification area and the number of icons that appear there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">But first, let\u2019s define the Notification area. Back in the days of Windows 9x and even XP it was referred to as the \u201cSystem Tray\u201d. The best way to define it is that it\u2019s the area of your taskbar that contains the clock. Here\u2019s a picture:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/notificationx.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Above: The unexpanded Notification area \u2013 Windows 10. The up-arrow (highlighted by us in a red square) expands the Notification area. When it has been expanded you can (generally) see icons of (some) programs currently running in the background including some that start with Windows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/notification-expanded.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Above: The expanded Notification area. We have highlighted a couple of features. One the \u201cup arrow\u201d \u2013 highlighted by the green circle \u2013 expands and contracts the Notification area. And highlighted in red, the thin vertical rectangular area at the very far right edge of the Notification area is the \u201cdesktop\u201d icon. Click that thin narrow area and you\u2019ll go directly to your desktop. Try it \u2013 we\u2019ll be here when you come back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><em>Taking Control of the Notification Area<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Now that you know what the Notification looks like and where it is, we\u2019re going to show you how to control it. If the Notification area has expanded and is consuming most or almost all of the taskbar on your Windows 10 computer and looks more like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/notification-full.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Than this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/notificationx.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Here\u2019s how to tame the Notification area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">(1.) Right-click on your taskbar and choose \u201cTaskbar settings\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">(2.) In Taskbar settings scroll down the menu until you see the \u201cNotification area\u201d\u2026 then click on \u201cSelect which icons appear on the taskbar\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/narea0.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">(3.) In the \u201cSelect which icons\u201d dialog \u2013 under \u201cAlways show all icons in the notification area\u201d turn the switch to \u201cOff\u201d. You can select which icons you want to show in the Notification area by turning the switch next to it to \u201cOn\u201d. For instance, below I have Network and Volume control set to show in the Notification area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/narea-a.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">(4.) If you want more control over the Notification area\u2026under Taskbar settings &gt; Notification area, click on \u201cTurn system icons on or off\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/narea1b.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Tips Cloudeight\" width=\"497\" height=\"489\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">And you\u2019ll see a menu appear from which you can turn system icons on or off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/narea1.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight InfoAve\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/202-\/narea1a.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight InfoAVe\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Please use discretion in turning system icons off.
