Open File Explorer (Windows Key+ E_<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">2. In &#8220;This PC&#8221;, right-click on the drive you want to check<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">3. Choose &#8220;Properties&#8221; then click the\u00a0 &#8220;Tools&#8221; tab.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">4. Click the &#8220;Check&#8221; button under &#8220;Error checking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">You can also check your drives using CHKDSK and the Command prompt. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/find-and-repair-hard-drive-errors-with-windows-chkdsk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See our article here.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And there&#8217;s another, lesser-known way, to check your drive(s) and that&#8217;s by using the WMIC command. Here&#8217;s how:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Open a Command Prompt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In Windows 10 type CMD in the taskbar search. When &#8220;Command Prompt&#8221; appears at the top, press Enter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"auto-style1\" style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In the Command Prompt enter the following command exactly as shown (copy &amp; paste works too):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span class=\"auto-style805\">WMIC DISKDRIVE GET MODEL,STATUS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Then press Enter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Make sure you type the command exactly as it\u2019s shown above or it won&#8217;t work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/wmicdrive.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight InfoAve\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As you can see above, my hard drive is A-OK. You can also see the make and model of the hard drive. If you have an external drive or drives plugged in, the WMIC command will check those as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"> If you get error messages with error codes, be sure to look them up online. If your drive or drives are not OK, make sure your data is backed up on a working external hard drive.
