{"id":20022,"date":"2020-09-14T08:36:40","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T12:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/?p=20022"},"modified":"2020-09-14T08:36:40","modified_gmt":"2020-09-14T12:36:40","slug":"you-dont-need-to-safely-remove-a-usb-drive-on-windows-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/you-dont-need-to-safely-remove-a-usb-drive-on-windows-10\/","title":{"rendered":"You Don&#8217;t Need to &#8220;Safely Remove&#8221; a USB Drive on Windows 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 24pt;\">You Don&#8217;t Need to &#8220;Safely Remove&#8221; a USB Drive on Windows 10<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This morning we had a question from a reader who was fretting over not being able to &#8220;Safely remove&#8221; USB drives ever since updating to Windows 10 version 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/yywo67w2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows Latest<\/a>, you don&#8217;t need to worry&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;If you use Windows 10 version 1903 or newer, Windows now automatically disables write caching for USB drives and you won\u2019t find the \u2018eject\u2019 option because it\u2019s no longer needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Last year, Microsoft introduced a new policy for Windows 10 that instructs the operating system to allow you to remove the device without using safely remove hardware or eject option&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Windows comes with different policies you can select for USB storage devices. By default, Windows 10 is set to use the \u201cquick removal\u201d policy that ensures devices can be disconnected from your computer directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Another option is \u201cBetter performance\u201d that improves performance but requires you to use the \u201cSafely remove hardware\u201d option&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If want to take out a USB drive without using the old &#8220;Safely remove hardware&#8221; notification icon you can now do so safely as &#8220;quick removal&#8221; is the default on Windows 10 version 1903 and newer versions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">You can verify that Quick Removal is default this way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">1.) Open Disk Management (right-click on the Start button and click &#8220;Disk Management&#8221;.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">2.) In Disk Management right-click on a connected USB flash drive and choose &#8220;Properties&#8221;.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">3.) In the USB drive Properties dialog, click on &#8220;Hardware&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/safely-remove0.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 - Safely remove hardware\" width=\"562\" height=\"537\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">4.) In the Hardware dialog, click on the Properties button.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2020\/safely-remove01.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 - Safely remove hardware\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">5.)
