The demand for the vaccine vastly exceeds the supply &#8211; at least here in the USA. And we all should know by now, when many people want something that most cannot get, the scammers step in to take advantage of the situation. And sadly, this is happening with the Covid-19 vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The following article comes to us via <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/how-to-avoid-covid-19-vaccine-scams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mashable<\/a>. We are posting it here to help you avoid Covid-19 vaccine scams and scammers.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 24pt;\">Before you sign up for a COVID vaccine, make sure you\u2019re not being tricked by scammers<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">By Matt Binder<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Scammers have found a new target for their money-making schemes: vulnerable people looking to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Researchers with the email security firm Tessian have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tessian.com\/blog\/how-hackers-are-exploiting-the-covid-19-vaccine-rollout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discovered<\/a>\u00a0that scam artists are behind many of the more than 2,600 newly registered domain names promoting COVID-19 vaccines. The scammers are looking to steal sensitive personal data from unsuspecting people seeking vaccine information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Uncertainty over the vaccine roll-out and people&#8217;s desire for information about how to get it has created the perfect storm for convincing phishing scams,&#8221; explained Tessian CEO Tim Sadler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Once a person clicks on a link to one of these malicious websites, they are usually directed to a login page if they want information about the COVID-19 vaccine. In some cases, users were even asked to make a payment on the site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">How to spot the COVID scams<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">1. <strong>Legitimate sites won&#8217;t ask for your third-party passwords<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Researchers discovered that many of these specific sites presented users with an Office 365 or Apple ID login. For example, users were offered the opportunity to apply for a COVID-19 vaccination on some of these fake websites&#8230;if they entered their login credentials for one of these third-party platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">An example of one of these malicious phishing websites discovered by Tessian.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-credit\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Even if a user doesn\u2019t necessarily have sensitive information connected with those accounts, Sadler explained how a large percentage of people reuse their online passwords. All it takes is for a user to input their login credentials for one platform. A scammer can then take that email and password combination and try it on a user\u2019s Google account or banking accounts. The possibilities are potentially endless.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">2. Watch for misspelled urls<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">According to the report, nearly a quarter of these registered domains are spoofing authentic COVID information sites, like the CDC. Scammers register domain names that look like the official URL of a legitimate website, a practice called \u201ctyposquatting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For example, the Center for Vaccine Development uses the domain name \u201ccvdvaccine.com.\u201d In order to trick users, scammers have registered domain names with one \u201cC\u201d in \u201cvaccine.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The domains also target \u201ccommon questions\u201d related to the COVID vaccine, such as \u201cwhere to get vaccinated?\u201d Some of these sites also push disinformation claiming the vaccines cause side effects. According to Tessian&#8217;s research, most of these domain names were registered in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">3. &#8220;Find out more&#8221; prompts can be a trick<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Under the guise of a healthcare organization, some of these COVID-19 vaccination scams will reach out to you in your inbox. These emails will tease important information concerning the vaccines, asking the recipient to click a &#8220;find out more&#8221; link in order to access the crucial details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">These &#8220;find out more&#8221; links take the unsuspecting user to one of those fake websites set up to steal their email, password, and other sensitive information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">&#8220;You should be wary of emails that are claiming to come from health care organizations,&#8221; said Sadler. &#8220;Always check the send name and address on an email.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Sadler pointed out that some email clients obfuscate detailed sender information. So, to be safe, users should check official government websites in order to verify how they would go about contacting citizens when it comes to vaccinations.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">4. Be wary when a website asks for personal info<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">rmation<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Scammers can access a lot with very little information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cQuestion any websites that request personal data or credentials,&#8221; explained Sadler. &#8220;It is unusual for a government website to ask you for your credentials [from other platforms].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Be extra cautious in giving up even more personal information such as social security numbers or medical history details.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Before inputting any sensitive data, users should always directly go to official government websites themselves. Don&#8217;t click on links that were sent to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">5. Don&#8217;t pay for a spot in line<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A scammer&#8217;s goal is to make a buck off of tricking users. Don&#8217;t fall for any websites requesting payment for a spot in line for the vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Awareness is crucial,&#8221; said Sadler. &#8220;People should be skeptical of emails or websites that are requesting any kind of payment.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In the U.S., the COVID-19 vaccine is available for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/health\/conditions-treatments\/info-2021\/covid-vaccine-costs.html#:~:text=Even%20if%20you%20do%20not,relief%20fund%20the%20law%20created.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In general, users should never enter bank account details or credit card information on a website that they are not familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There could be even more scams<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This research is only a small look at the COVID-19 scams out there. Tessian pulled these domains based on searches for newly registered names containing keywords related to COVID-19. With hundreds of thousands of domain names\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verisign.com\/assets\/domain-name-report-Q32020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><ins>registered<\/ins><\/a>\u00a0on a daily basis, there\u2019s certain to be new malicious websites taking advantage of the pandemic to scam people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So, how can people looking for COVID-19 vaccine information avoid falling victim to such scams?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201cWhen in doubt, just don&#8217;t trust the website and actually reach out proactively to contact an agency or the government rather than have them contact you,\u201d he recommended.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;
