{"id":22054,"date":"2021-09-06T09:42:57","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T13:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/?p=22054"},"modified":"2021-09-06T09:42:57","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T13:42:57","slug":"browser-settings-to-prevent-malicious-pages-from-reopening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/browser-settings-to-prevent-malicious-pages-from-reopening\/","title":{"rendered":"Browser Settings to Prevent Malicious Pages from Reopening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 24pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Browser Settings to Prevent Malicious Pages from Reopening<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/how-to-close-your-browser-in-a-hurry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recently we posted an article<\/a> showing you how to close your browser in hurry should you encounter a malicious website or advertisement, or one of the ubiquitous computer support scams that lie in wait for you like mines in a harbor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When you close your browser using Task Manager, the Taskkill command, ALT+f4, or restarting your computer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/how-to-close-your-browser-in-a-hurry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as described on this page<\/a>), you&#8217;re going to find that your browser will offer to restore the pages that were open when you forced the browser to close. If you&#8217;re trying to prevent a malicious page or advertisement, or a tech support scam page from reopening, <strong>restoring the open pages is the last thing you should do<\/strong>. Here&#8217;s how to prevent that from happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Google Chrome<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When you reopen Chrome after you forced it to close, Chrome shows a popup offering to restore the pages that were open.\u00a0 You certainly do not want to do this if you shut Chrome down to avoid malicious pages or advertisements. So, you&#8217;ll want to click the X in the upper right corner of the popup or click the &#8220;Cancel&#8221; button at the bottom. See the screenshot below&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/chrome-closed.png\" alt=\"Chrome - Cloudeight InfoAve\" width=\"374\" height=\"244\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Additionally, make sure that Chrome&#8217;s &#8220;On Startup&#8221; settings are not set to reopen the tabs that were open when you closed your browser.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Click on the 3-vertical dots in the top-right corner of Chrome and choose &#8220;Settings&#8221; from the menu that appears. When Chrome&#8217;s Settings open, choose &#8220;On startup&#8221; from the menu on the left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/onstartup-chrome.png\" alt=\"Chrome - on startup - Cloudeight InfoAve\" width=\"234\" height=\"337\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In the &#8220;On startup&#8221; section, make sure that &#8220;Continue where you left off&#8221; is<strong> NOT<\/strong> selected. Either of the other two choices is fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/onstartup-chrome1.png\" alt=\"Chrome - on startup - Cloudeight InfoAve\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Microsoft Edge<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When you reopen Edge after you forced it to close, Edge, like Chrome, will show a popup offering to restore the pages that you had open.\u00a0 You certainly don&#8217;t to do this, especially if you shut Edge down to avoid malicious pages or advertisements. So, click the X in the upper right corner or click the &#8220;Open startup pages&#8221; at the bottom of the popup. See the screenshot below&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/edge-closed.png\" alt=\"Edge - Cloudeight InfoAve \" width=\"370\" height=\"188\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">And make sure you check your settings in Microsoft Edge ad make sure you <strong>DO NOT<\/strong> have it set to reopen the tabs that were open when you closed Microsoft Edge.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Click the hamburger icon (3 horizontal lines) at the top-right of MS Edge. From the Settings menu, choose &#8220;Start, home, and new tabs&#8221;. See the screenshot below&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/onstartup-edge.png\" alt=\"Edge - on startup. Cloudeight\" width=\"318\" height=\"485\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In the &#8220;When Edge starts&#8221; section, <strong>never<\/strong> choose the option &#8220;Open tabs from the previous section&#8221;. Choose either &#8220;Open the new tab page&#8221; or &#8220;Open these pages&#8221; if you have a start page or pages you want Edge to open on startup. See the screenshot&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/onstartup-edge1.png\" alt=\"Edge - on startup. Cloudeight\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Firefox<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When you reopen Firefox after you forced it to close, Firefox opens a page that offers to restore the pages that were open when you forced it to close.\u00a0 You do not want to do this if you shut Firefox down to avoid malicious pages or advertisements. So, click &#8220;Start New Session&#8221; as shown in the screenshot below&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/firefox-closed.png\" alt=\"Firefox - Cloudeight \" width=\"589\" height=\"321\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">And make sure you check your settings in Firefox to make sure you DO NOT have it set to reopen the tabs that were open when you closed Firefox.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Click the hamburger icon (3 horizontal lines) at the top-right of Firefox and choose &#8220;Settings&#8221; from the drop-down menu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/onstartup-firefox.png\" alt=\"Firefox - Cloudeight\" width=\"285\" height=\"609\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When Firefox Settings opens, it will open to the &#8220;General&#8221; tab. Under &#8220;General&#8221; make sure you <strong>DO NOT<\/strong> have &#8220;Restore previous session&#8221; checked. See the screenshot below&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/onstartup-firefox1.png\" alt=\"Firefox - Cloudeight\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you&#8217;re not using Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, you&#8217;ll be glad to know that all browsers have similar settings.
