{"id":24323,"date":"2022-10-06T09:18:14","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T13:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/?p=24323"},"modified":"2022-10-06T09:18:14","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T13:18:14","slug":"faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/faith\/","title":{"rendered":"Faith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 36pt;\">Faith<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Almost all of us who have children have had the common and amazing, experience of teaching a child to ride a bike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Before I get rolling, let\u2019s clarify the word \u201cbike\u201d. Long ago, unfortunately, the word \u201cbike\u201d was an unambiguous word that meant bicycle \u2013 the kind with two wheels, a bell, streamers, and usually a kid perched upon its seat. But now it can mean \u2013 and often does \u2013 a group of men and women, roaring down the road, two-by-two, in lines of \u201cbikes\u201d a half-mile long. Most of them decked out in black leather accouterments. Many with wallets hanging from chains. Why is that I wonder? Anyway, other than misusing the word \u201cbike\u201d, it\u2019s all well and fine with me \u2013 to each his own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I want to emphasize, though, that in my world a motorcycle is not a bike. Motorcycles are fine \u2013 if you like them, but they\u2019re not bikes. And I don\u2019t like \u201cbike weeks\u201d either, because bike weeks should be reserved for bikes \u2013 the bikes with streamers and bells on the handlebars and kids \u2013 or wannabe kids \u2013 on the seat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I digress. If you\u2019ve had the experience of teaching a child to ride a bike \u2013 or if you remember your own experience of learning to ride a bike \u2013 have you ever thought about what a magical and life-changing experience that is?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">We have all heard the aphorism \u201cjust have a little faith\u201d. But I\u2019m sure there\u2019s no such thing as a little faith. There is only big, complete, and total faith. You have to believe without any doubts to have faith. That\u2019s what faith is all about. It is <em>big-time<\/em> faith or <em>none<\/em> at all \u2013 at least if you want good things&#8230; even amazing things to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">On a sunny, spring morning long ago&#8230; my oldest son was 7 years old. I had just bought him a brand new bicycle \u2013 a Schwinn. It was a great brand when I was a kid, but I guess Schwinns are made in China or Indonesia or somewhere else these days which does not make them bad, but they\u2019re sure not the same, But back then, I bought him a 24\u2033 American-made Schwinn, which was a tad big for him, but like all things you buy for kids, you buy with the future in mind. Kids grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He was very skeptical about his ability to ride a \u201ctwo-wheeler\u201d \u2013 training wheels exorcised \u2013 the bike now a sleek, streamlined, two-wheel vehicle perfect for an eager, and seriously skeptical, seven-year-old boy,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">You have to believe. You gotta have faith&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I spent probably ten or fifteen minutes holding on to the back of the bicycle while he pedaled away. He knew I was back there, running behind him, holding the bike up so he and it wouldn\u2019t fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Faith.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">His faith was misplaced. He had faith that I would hold onto the bike and not let him fall. But, at one point, I let go and kept running behind him as if I were holding him up. I slowed down and let him get ahead of me, and said: \u201cLook behind you \u2013 you\u2019re riding the bike by yourself \u2013 I\u2019m not holding you up!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He looked and saw me standing far behind him. His faith in me got him started, but his <em>faith in himself<\/em> kept him going. He was riding on his own. Every single day since that day, when he rides a bike he knows he won\u2019t fall \u2013 he has faith. He has big, complete, and total faith. He has no doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And just about 10 years later I taught my youngest son to ride a bike. The faith it took to believe is always the same when it comes to riding a bike \u2013 or anything else you want to accomplish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Imagine what we could do with our lives if we had that kind of faith in our own abilities every single day. Maybe we could move mountains. Or invent great things. Or write amazing novels. Be great artists and paint the beautiful landscapes of the world and the often colorful people in it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Or maybe just be better parents and grandparents by teaching our children and grandchildren the importance of having faith. The kind of faith that instills in them the belief that everything in their lives they want to accomplish they <em>can<\/em> accomplish if they have faith. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Faith is believing. Faith is knowing. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Faith is knowing you can climb any mountain, move any obstacle, become anything you want to be\u2026 and all you need is faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">We teach kids how to ride a bike and remind them of the moment we let go and they were riding on their own. Faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In life, we\u2019re riding on our own all of the time \u2013 even if we are lucky enough to be surrounded by family and friends who love us. They can support us and they can cheer us on, but like the boy or girl on the bike, we need to have faith in ourselves and believe. We don&#8217;t have anyone holding us up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There\u2019s nothing we cannot do, there\u2019s nothing we cannot accomplish, there\u2019s nothing we cannot be if we truly believe. If we have faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Faith, my friend, is so hard to recognize,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When you\u2019re traveling, all alone in the night \u2013<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So, look to the light and\u2026 (P. F. Sloan, \u201cFrom a Distance\u201d)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Whenever you think you\u2019ve lost faith, just look back and remember the day you learned to ride a bike \u2013 or the day you taught a child to ride a bike and think about the faith you saw on that day. I think, if you do that, you\u2019ll begin to see how important faith is and you just might find you have a lot more faith than you think.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">To have faith is to trust yourself to the water.
