In the past eleven years, we have worked on thousands of computers and we\u2019ve seen just about everything. All too frequently we\u2019ve seen computer repair services taking advantage of senior citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Far too often we have learned of people paying hundreds of dollars for unnecessary computer work that didn\u2019t repair anything. Far too many times we have helped people who were frightened by some computer repair crook who told them that their computer was corrupted, infected, or \u201chacked\u201d. We see now, more than ever, companies that most consider legitimate, preying on and scaring folks with the \u201cdark web\u201d threat, knowing full well that most people don\u2019t know much at all about the dark web. Nothing frightens people more than the unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We\u2019ve watched dishonest companies prosper. We\u2019ve seen crooks become wealthy. We\u2019ve seen people scared into spending hundreds of dollars unnecessarily by one tech support scam or another. When we read this older article in the \u201cUSAToday\u201d newspaper, we were not shocked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Here\u2019s part of that article \u2013 and it\u2019s so disturbing to us because, in our work, we see this going on every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">$356,000 to protect your computer?<\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Feds promise \u2018all-out attack\u2019 on scams targeting the elderly<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">WASHINGTON \u2013 One man, alarmed at the thought that hackers might attack his computer, shelled out $14,990 to a company promising a \u201cfix\u201d that would keep it safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Eight months later, the 68-year-old from Hawaii mailed the same company a check for $24,999 more. And he kept paying. All told, the unnamed man, who suffers from dementia, sent about $356,000 in checks and wire transfers, unaware that the computer security alert was part of a network of elaborate scams that the government says cost the nation\u2019s elderly and infirm hundreds of millions of dollars over the past year alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The case is part of a heartbreaking archive of court documents filed in just the past year, charging more than 200 suspects with trying to swindle 2 million Americans, most of them elderly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Federal authorities said the illicit operations, some based in the United States and others scattered across the globe, looted seniors of nearly $1 billion. The charges brought in the past 12 months, the second such enforcement campaign in as many years, represents the largest of the federal sweeps against elder fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u2018Crimes against the elderly target some of the most vulnerable people in our society,\u2019 Attorney General William Barr said Thursday. He said the Justice Department will intensify its efforts to target those cams (sic), promising to mount an \u2018all-out attack.\u2019\u2026<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/atn9Fb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read the entire USAToday article here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We see this kind of thing all the time&#8230; and it&#8217;s very disturbing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Just in the past week, we did computer repair work for several people who were told their computers were corrupted, infected,\u00a0 or hacked. These folks were offered \u201crepairs\u201d costing hundreds of dollars. Many times the cost of the repair was more than the cost of a new computer \u2013 and sometimes much more than a new computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We have been on the Web for twenty-five years and we thought we had seen it all, but it seems things just keep getting worse. There is hardly a day that goes by that we don\u2019t spend time trying put things in perspective for people who receive threatening or terrifying emails. The best defense against this constant wave of selling by fear is knowing the truth, but it\u2019s hard to reach out to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">And the truth is that legitimate companies and crooks alike are raking in billions of dollars by scaring people \u2013 particularly older folks \u2013 into buying something they don\u2019t need or paying for computer \u201crepairs\u201d that are not necessary and which may actually make their computers run more poorly. By changing settings and drivers and so on, the computer tech ensures future computer problems will occur and therefore ensures a returning customer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The problem is not limited to the elderly. But older folks, more than any other group, use their computers as their window to the world. More than younger people, seniors use their computers to keep in touch with their family and friends, to pass the time, do social networking, develop or engage in hobbies, learn new things, explore, make travel plans, make new friends, or just keep up with the happenings around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Crooks and miscreants pray on older people because they are more trusting. And let\u2019s not forget, most people \u2013 young or old are not always computer savvy. Thus we have crooks preying on older people \u2013 and taking millions of dollars from them because they are more trusting and not always the most computer savvy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Worse, it is not only the crooks.\u00a0 Lately, we have seen more and more legitimate companies using the boogeyman approach to sell products and services using fear to bolster sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201cYour Social Security number was found on the dark web\u201d is a popular subject line in the boogeyman approach to selling something. When you click the link to find out exactly where your Social Security number appeared and how it\u2019s being used, don\u2019t expect to get the information free \u2013 it\u2019s going to cost you. And more often than not the threat will be either non-existent or trivial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We work hard and spend a lot of time staying informed and keeping up with things so that we can help you.
