Look up, that’s the “application key”. It’s usually on the bottom \t\t\trow of your keyboard. Look, you’ll find it.<\/p>\n
We’re betting that 90% of you don’t have a clue what this key is \t\t\tor what it’s for…and if you’re one of those 90% don’t worry it. We \t\t\thad forgotten about it too, until TC was doing his yearly keyboard \t\t\tcleaning – getting rid cracker crumbs and coffee spills and other \t\t\tgunk – and notice the application key he had forgotten about years \t\t\tbefore.<\/p>\n
So what’s the first thing you do? You press it. What happens depends \t\t\ton when you press it and what you’re doing when you press it.<\/p>\n
If an application is open, such as Metapad (which is what I use when \t\t\tI’m writing this newsletter, pressing the application key is the \t\t\tsame as clicking “Edit” on the program’s toolbar.<\/p>\n
If you have no programs open and you’re sitting there staring at \t\t\tyour desktop and you press the application key you’ll get the \t\t\tDesktop properties menu – the same menu you’d see if you \t\t\tright-clicked the desktop and chose “Properties”. If your taskbar is \t\t\tin focus and your press the application key, the menu you get will \t\t\tbe the same as the menu you’d get if you right-clicked the taskbar \t\t\tand chose “Properties”.<\/p>\n
Which makes us wonder why they call it an “Application Key”, why not \t\t\t“Properties Key”?<\/p>\n
We don’t know why but we do know that if you play around with your \t\t\tapplication key and learn how to use it you can save mouse clicks. \t\t\tMany of you like mouse clicks but others don’t.<\/p>\n
Anyway, the most overlooked key on your keyboard is one that \t\t\tperforms several functions. And now, at least, you know what some of \t\t\tthem are. Play around with it, maybe you’ll find more uses for the \t\t\toft-forgotten application key.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
