But that’s \t\t\tnot to say there isn’t a place for file-by-file backups. There are \t\t\ttimes when you might need to access a file that you’ve accidentally \t\t\tdeleted or heaven knows what else caused it to disappear, and you \t\t\tdon’t really want to do an entire restore from an image-based backup \t\t\tto recover those three pictures of that Diluvian Cactus you were so \t\t\tintrigued with. Those were award-winning photos – and you know it. \t\t\tYou’ve been saving them for years waiting for a cactus-photo contest \t\t\tto start so you could enter and win the big prize. But now they’re \t\t\tgone. You don’t know where. You’re sure your image-based backup has \t\t\tthem but restoring from an image-based backup seems a bit of \t\t\toverkill for three pictures of a cactus. And yes, your image-based \t\t\tbackup does allow you to extract individual files, but well, you \t\t\twish you would have kept another backup somewhere, just so you could \t\t\tget those cactus pictures fast. Because starting today, a \t\t\tcactus-photo contest has started and you want that $10,000.00 first \t\t\tprize.<\/p>\n
So sometimes a file-by-file backup is convenient, but it doesn’t \t\t\treplace or supercede the need for a good image-based backup.<\/p>\n
All of this leads up to Digital Lifeboat. It’s a new cloud-based \t\t\tbackup service that allows you backup your files to a Web server \t\t\twhere they’ll be kept safe and secure (as long as you have a strong \t\t\tpassword) for you.
