Here are some of the reasons why phishing is so prevalent and so successful:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-sourcepos=\"3:1-7:0\">\n<li data-sourcepos=\"3:1-3:301\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>It is easy to create fake emails that look like they are from legitimate sources.<\/strong> Criminals can use email spoofing to make their emails appear to come from a trusted source, such as a bank or credit card company. This makes it more likely that people will open the emails and click on the links in them<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"4:1-4:274\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>People are often not careful about clicking on links in emails.<\/strong> Many people are used to receiving emails from legitimate sources, such as banks and retailers. They may not think twice about clicking on a link in an email, even if they are not familiar with the sender.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:247\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Phishing emails often contain urgent requests that make people feel like they need to act quickly.<\/strong> This can create a sense of urgency that makes people more likely to click on links or provide personal information without thinking carefully.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"6:1-7:0\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Phishing attacks are constantly evolving.<\/strong> Criminals are always finding new ways to trick people into falling for their scams. This makes it difficult for people to stay ahead of the curve.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:295\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Google adds a new feature to help in the fight against phishing.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:295\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In its fight against phishing, Google recently (August 23, 2023) announced a new security feature for Gmail called \u201cVerify it\u2019s you.\u201d This feature will prompt users to verify their identity when they attempt to perform certain sensitive actions, such as changing their password, enabling 2-step verification, or forwarding emails to another address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:295\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2023\/verify.png\" alt=\"Gmail's Verify it's you feature - Cloudeight InfoAve\" width=\"589\" height=\"711\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Sensitive actions in Gmail fall under three categories:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Filters<\/strong>: Creating a new filter, editing an existing filter, or importing filters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Forwarding<\/strong>: Adding a new forwarding address from the Forwarding and POP\/IMAP settings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>IMAP access<\/strong>: Enabling the IMAP access status from the settings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"7:1-7:316\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The \u201cVerify it\u2019s you\u201d prompt will also appear when Google detects that the user is trying to perform a sensitive action from a new or unusual device or location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:438\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The new &#8220;Verify it&#8217;s you&#8221; feature is designed to help protect users from phishing attacks. Phishing attacks are a type of cybercrime where attackers send emails that appear to be from a legitimate source, such as a bank or credit card company. The emails often contain a link that, when clicked, takes the user to a fake website that looks like the real website. Once the user enters their login information on the fake website, the attacker can steal it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:329\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The \u201cVerify it\u2019s you\u201d feature can help protect users from phishing attacks by making it more difficult for attackers to gain access to their accounts. By requiring users to verify their identity before they can perform specific sensitive actions, Google can help to make sure that only the real user can access the account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:329\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Google will <em>\u201cevaluate the session attempting the action, and if it\u2019s deemed risky, it will be challenged with a \u2018Verify it\u2019s you prompt.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:178\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The \u201cVerify it\u2019s you\u201d feature is rolling out now to all personal Google Accounts and Workspace customers. According to Google, everyone should have this feature by September 6, 2023.\u00a0 So, if you have not yet seen the prompt, you may see it soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:58\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Here are some tips for staying safe from phishing attacks:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-sourcepos=\"17:1-22:0\">\n<li data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:105\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Be suspicious of emails that ask for personal information, such as your password or credit card number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"18:1-18:60\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Never click on links in emails from people you don\u2019t know.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"18:1-18:60\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Never click on links in emails that appear to be from banks or other financial institutions prompting you to &#8220;verify&#8221; your account or password.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"19:1-19:110\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you\u2019re not sure if an email is legitimate, go directly to the website of the bank, financial institution, or company that sent the email.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"20:1-20:77\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Use good security software like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/emsisoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emsisoft<\/a><\/span> and keep it updated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"21:1-22:0\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Always use a strong password and wherever possible, enable 2-step verification for your accounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"23:1-23:80\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">By following the tips above, and by being ever wary and vigilant, you can help to protect yourself from phishing attacks.
