All those criticisms just roll off me like water off a duck. I\u2019ve been out of college for more years than some of you have been alive and there\u2019s not much chance of me taking any kind of remedial grammar or English courses. I don\u2019t want to learn how to diagram a sentence! I forgot that nonsense in grade school, and I\u2019ve never used it since. And don\u2019t snivel \u2013 diagramming sentences would not improve my grammar or my use \u2013or misuse\u2013 of the English language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Can you imagine the hoots and hollers I\u2019d get if I wrote this?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cGrammatically, for he\/she\/it we use \u201cdoes\u201d or \u201cdoesn\u2019t\u201d like in,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He doesn\u2019t eat meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">but these days I\u2019m observing the usage of the above sentence(especially in American movies) like this,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He don\u2019t eat meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So, after a lot of observations, I\u2019m assuming that both usages are correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">My assumption \u2013 When to use \u201cdon\u2019t\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In temporary situations like,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He don\u2019t have a pen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u2026Worth noting: though the validity of he don\u2019t in various dialects is debatable, I\u2019ve yet to come across a dialect in which he doesn\u2019t isn\u2019t considered correct. In other words, as a non-native speaker, it is always safest to err on the side of caution and use he doesn\u2019t. Speakers of \u2018don\u2019t dialects\u2019 might possibly find it a tad uppity or overly formal\u2014but not incorrect\u2026<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Nope! I think the purpose of language, both spoken and written, is to communicate. If you\u2019re gonna fret over passive voice, active voice, verb agreement, gerund usages, prepositions, and the like, I think you should teach English, edit books,\u00a0 or subscribe to the \u201cHow to Make Fun of \u2014 and Criticize \u2014 Stupid People Who Don\u2019t Write Well\u201d newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Let\u2019s get on with this. Language is for communication. If you speak or write and successfully communicate your thoughts or ideas, that\u2019s good enough for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If I tell you \u2013 <em>\u201cMake certainly that you don\u2019t drop you&#8217;re computer in to the bath tub if it gots water in it!\u201d Criticize the English if you must, but don\u2019t ignore my warning! OK ignore me and go ahead &#8212; correct that sentence and ruin your computer.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The English language is alive \u2013 IT\u2019S ALIVE! IT\u2019S ALIVE! And because it\u2019s alive, it\u2019s constantly changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">We think teenagers don\u2019t use the English language so good. Right? Oh sorry\u2026 don\u2019t use the English language \u201cwell\u201d, is that better? It may surprise you to learn that many words that were once slang are now proper and have been officially approved by the <strong>English &amp; Grammar Police (EGP).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Let\u2019s take a look at a couple of 1920s slang phrases and words that are now accepted by the EGP:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Cat\u2019s Pajamas<\/strong> <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Darcy is the cat\u2019s pajamas. It means she\u2019s the best. (Don\u2019t get all excited, I\u2019m just making an example).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Wallflower<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Darcy is certainly not a wallflower, she\u2019s the center of attention!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>OK<br \/>\n<\/strong>Who doesn\u2019t use OK? Eh?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOK started off as the LOL of its time. Then Martin Van Buren\u2019s presidential campaign popularized it and its brevity proved useful for sending telegraph messages. Let&#8217;s forget the 1920s and move right along into the 2020s&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Busted<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Back when I was a kid the word \u201cbusted\u201d meant broken. To my kids, busted meant getting caught doing something wrong or getting arrested. Now, if you say something like \u201cDarlene is busted\u201d, it means Darlene is ugly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Ghosting<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Ghosting means &#8211; in the current vernacular &#8211; to abruptly cut off contact with someone without giving that person any warning or explanation for doing so. I think Darcy is ghosting me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Hip<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Originally hip was \u2014 and still is \u2014 a joint in the body. Hip over the years has evolved to mean fashionable (cool) and the word hip evolved into Hippie and more recently \u201cHipster\u201d. Darcy certainly is one of those.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And then we have words hipsters create by combining words to make new words that somehow find their way into the Oxford dictionary. I\u2019m assuming that the Oxford dictionary is the Bible of English words for the EGP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Frenemy<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This hipster word is a combination of the word friend and the word enemy. It\u2019s self-defining \u2013 I should not have to explain it. See how cool and flexible English is? The EGP should learn this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Bromance<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A combination of the words \u201cBrother\u201d and \u201cRomance\u201d bromance is an intense relationship between two straight men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Ginormous<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Guess? Yes! Gigantic and enormous combined to make the word ginormous. No definition is needed. Darcy\u2019s yacht is ginormous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And now some more from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourdictionary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.yourdictionary.com<\/a><\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Read:<\/strong> To \u2018read\u2019 someone means you\u2019re calling them out for their bad behavior. \u2018Wow. I said I would share if I win the lottery.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Ship<\/strong>: Short for\u2019romantic relationship,\u2019 sometimes used as a verb. \u2018Everyone wants to ship Edward and bella, but they say they\u2019re just good friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>The tea<\/strong>: When someone is dishing\u2019the tea,\u2019 they\u2019re gossiping, particularly with the juiciest or most dramatic gossip.\u2019Let\u2019s call Wendy. She always has the tea.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Thirsty<\/strong>: If someone\u2019s \u2018thirsty,\u2019 it means they\u2019re a little too eager or even desperate.\u2019Look at the way she dressed for their second date. She\u2019s way too thirsty.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Throw shade<\/strong>: To\u2019throw shade\u2019 means to insult or say something unkind about someone.\u2019I can\u2019t believe he said that. He just threw some serious shade.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Woke<\/strong>: Slang for\u2019awakened,\u2019 as in being highly aware of social injustices. \u2018If you\u2019re so woke, why didn\u2019t you vote?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>YOLO<\/strong>: An acronym for\u2019you only live once,\u2019 encouraging people to seize the day.\u2019Of course you should go on that trip to Dublin! YOLO!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And even more slang from \u201cUSA Today\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c\u2026<strong>Bruh<\/strong> = another way of saying \u2018bro\u2019 or \u2018brother\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Canceled<\/strong> = done, deleted, finished, blocked on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; Bridge out a head\u201d and drive their car into the river once spanned by the now, non-existent bridge. I can hear them yammering about poor grammar as the car splashes into the river.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I am used to people throwing shade at my writing.
