The average loss per victim was $1100. However, the cost of identity theft can vary widely depending on the type of fraud that is committed. For example, victims of credit card fraud may have to pay unauthorized charges, while victims of tax fraud may have to pay additional taxes or penalties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Identity theft is a serious crime, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your financial well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I was looking for information on phishing and found an excellent article about phishing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s well-written and easy to read. And while it is written with U.S. citizens in mind, most of the information applies to everyone regardless of where you live.\u00a0 We would like you to read it&#8217;s important to us that we help you stay safe. The following is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams#recognize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FTC.gov website<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"node-title\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 24pt;\">How to Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Scammers use email or text messages to trick you into giving them your personal and financial information. But there are several ways to protect yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">How To Recognize Phishing<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Scammers use email or text messages to try to steal your passwords, account numbers, or Social Security numbers. If they get that information, they could get access to your email, bank, or other accounts. Or they could sell your information to other scammers. Scammers launch thousands of phishing attacks like these every day \u2014 and they\u2019re often successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Scammers often update their tactics to keep up with the latest news or trends, but here are some common tactics used in phishing emails or text messages:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Phishing emails and text messages often tell a story to trick you into clicking on a link or opening an attachment.\u00a0You might get an unexpected email or text message that looks like it\u2019s from a company you know or trust, like a bank or a credit card or utility company. Or maybe it\u2019s from an online payment website or app. The message could be from a scammer, who might<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">say they\u2019ve noticed some suspicious activity or log-in attempts \u2014 they haven\u2019t<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">claim there\u2019s a problem with your account or your payment information \u2014 there isn\u2019t<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">say you need to confirm some personal or financial information \u2014 you don\u2019t<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">include an\u00a0invoice you don\u2019t recognize \u2014 it\u2019s fake<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">want you to click on a link to make a payment \u2014 but the link has malware<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">say you\u2019re eligible to register for a\u00a0government\u00a0refund \u2014 it\u2019s a scam<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">offer a coupon for free stuff \u2014 it\u2019s not real<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Here\u2019s a real-world example of a phishing email:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"media__content\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__label usa-sr-only\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Image<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/netflixscreenshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/scaled_lg\/public\/netflixscreenshot.jpg?itok=CZfuae0l\" alt=\"Netflix phishing scam screenshot\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Imagine you saw this in your inbox.\u00a0At first glance, this email looks real, but it\u2019s not. Scammers who send emails like this one are hoping you won\u2019t notice it\u2019s a fake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Here are signs that this email is a scam, even though it looks like it comes from a company you know \u2014 and even uses the company\u2019s logo in the header:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The email has a generic greeting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The email says your account is on hold because of a billing problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The email invites you to click on a link to update your payment details.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">While real companies might communicate with you by email, legitimate companies won\u2019t email or text with a link to update your payment information. Phishing emails can often have real consequences for people who give scammers their information, including identity theft. And they might harm the reputation of the companies they\u2019re spoofing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">How To Protect Yourself From Phishing Attacks<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Your email spam filters might keep many phishing emails out of your inbox. But scammers are always trying to outsmart spam filters, so extra layers of protection can help.\u00a0Here are four ways to protect yourself from phishing attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Four Ways To Protect Yourself From Phishing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>1. <\/strong><strong>Protect your computer by using security software<\/strong>. Set the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/protect-your-personal-information-data\">software to update automatically<\/a>\u00a0so it will deal with any new security threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>2. Protect your cell phone by setting software to update automatically.<\/strong>\u00a0These updates could give you critical protection against security threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>3. Protect your accounts by using multi-factor authentication.<\/strong>\u00a0Some accounts offer extra security by requiring two or more credentials to log in to your account. This is called multi-factor authentication. The extra credentials you need to log in to your account fall into three categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">something you know \u2014 like a passcode, a PIN, or the answer to a security question.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">something you have \u2014 like a one-time verification passcode you get by text, email, or from an authenticator app; or a security key<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">something you are \u2014 like a scan of your fingerprint, your retina, or your face<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Multi-factor authentication\u00a0makes it\u00a0harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>4. <\/strong>Protect your data by backing it up.\u00a0Back up the data on your computer\u00a0to an external hard drive or in the cloud. Back up the data on your phone, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What To Do if You Suspect a Phishing Attack<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you get an email or a text message that asks you to click on a link or open an attachment, answer this question:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Do I have an account with the company or know the person who contacted me?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>If the answer is \u201cNo,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>it could be a phishing scam. Go back and review the advice in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams#recognize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to recognize phishing<\/a>\u00a0and look for signs of a phishing scam. If you see them,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams#report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report the message<\/a>\u00a0and then delete it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>If the answer is \u201cYes,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real \u2014 <b>not<\/b> the information in the email.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Attachments and links might install <a href=\"http:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-remove-avoid-malware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harmful\u00a0malware<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">What To Do if\u00a0You Responded to a Phishing Email<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you think a scammer has your information, like your Social Security, credit card, or bank account number, go to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.identitytheft.gov\/Info-Lost-or-Stolen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IdentityTheft.gov<\/a>. There you\u2019ll see the specific steps to take based on the information that you lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you think you clicked on a link or opened an attachment that downloaded harmful software,\u00a0update your computer\u2019s security software. Then run a scan and remove anything it identifies as a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">How To Report Phishing<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you got a phishing email or text message, report it.
