{"id":27323,"date":"2023-11-20T07:04:26","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T12:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/?p=27323"},"modified":"2023-11-20T07:04:26","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T12:04:26","slug":"how-to-delete-windows-temporary-files-using-file-explorer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/how-to-delete-windows-temporary-files-using-file-explorer\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Delete Windows Temporary Files Using File Explorer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 24pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">How to Delete Windows Temporary Files Using File Explorer <\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">This tip is for Windows 10 and Windows 11<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you\u2019ve used Storage Sense (Settings) or Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files, you\u2019ve probably noticed there are still a lot of temporary files remaining on your PC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you want to clean up nearly all of the temporary files on your computer,\u00a0 you can do that using File Explorer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">1. <strong>Important:<\/strong> Save anything you\u2019re working on and close all open programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">2. Press Windows + R to open a Run box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">3. Type <strong>%temp%<\/strong> into the Run box and press \u201cEnter\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/del-temp0.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" width=\"401\" height=\"208\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">4. A File Explorer window will open with a lot of temporary files and folders. Press Ctrl + A to select all the temporary files at once. When all are selected, right-click and choose \u201cDelete\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/del-temp00.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">IMPORTANT: If you get a warning that certain files can\u2019t be deleted \u2013 it\u2019s because they\u2019re in use. If you see this warning, choose \u201cSkip\u201d to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">5. Press the Windows key + R to open another Run box. Type TEMP in the Run box and press \u201cEnter\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/del-temp2.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">NOTE: You may get a warning that you don\u2019t have permission to access this folder. If you do, just click \u201cContinue\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">6. Press CTRL+A to select all the files and folders in the directory. Once they are all selected, right-click and choose \u201cDelete\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2022\/temptemp1.png\" alt=\"Cloudeight Windows 10 and Windows 11 Tips\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Something else to remember \u2013 If you get a warning that certain files cannot be deleted click &#8220;Skip&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">You\u2019re almost done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">7. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and choose \u201cEmpty Recycle Bin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">That\u2019s it. Now you know how to delete almost all of your temporary files using File Explorer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">For a more advanced approach, you can use the Command Prompt to manually delete temporary files. Make sure to save anything you&#8217;re working on and close all open programs before proceeding:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Type <em>Command Prompt<\/em> in the Taskbar search &amp; press Enter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Right-click on the Command Prompt icon and select &#8220;Run as administrator.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In the Command Prompt window, copy and paste or type the following command (exactly as shown) and press Enter:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">del \/q \/f \/s %temp%\\*<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Remember, you can never delete all the temporary files on your computer because as long as Windows is running, temporary files are constantly being created.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><br \/>\nWait!
