How to Organize Windows Folders Just the Way You Want Them<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This tip is for Windows 10 and Windows 11<\/span><\/p>\n

We are often asked how to sort folders by date, name, type, and so on.\u00a0 So, here\u2019s a simple, Windows back-to-basics tip, which will help you organize the content of almost any folder the way you want it organized.<\/span><\/p>\n

Open any folder and right-click on a blank space in the folder. You will see a menu appear. Click on \u201cSort by\u201c, and you\u2019ll see another menu appear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Above \u2013 Windows 10. Below \u2013 Windows 11.<\/span><\/p>\n

From that menu, you can sort all the items in that folder by Name, Date, Type, Size, and Tags.\u00a0 And in the unlikely event you need even more choices, click on \u201cMore\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also find that you can sort the folder contents in ascending or descending order. When sorting files by date, ascending order means the newest files are listed first and the oldest files are listed at the bottom. Descending order places the newest files at the bottom and the oldest files at the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can sort any folder by name, date, type, size, and tags in ascending or descending order.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s do another example. Let\u2019s sort a file alphabetically.\u00a0We\u2019re going to sort folder content by name. If we choose ascending order, files will be alphabetically sorted from A to Z. If we choose descending order, files will be alphabetically sorted from Z to A. See?<\/span><\/p>\n

You can sort folder content by \u201cName\u201d, \u201cStatus\u201d. \u201cDate modified\u201d, \u201cType\u201d, and \u201cSize\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Above: You can change the order of the folder content by right-clicking inside a folder, choosing \u201cSort by\u201d and choose your preference.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are sorting numbered files, remember that ascending order puts numbered files in order from the smallest number to the largest number.<\/span><\/p>\n

And descending order lists numbered files from the largest number to the smallest number.<\/span><\/p>\n

And remember if you\u2019re sorting by folder content by date, ascending order puts the newest files at the top and the oldest files at the bottom. Descending order does the opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n
