\"\"<\/a>We know how cool it is to have an email address like \t\t\t linda@yourwonderfulisp.com<\/a> . And, most of us, when we sign \t\t\tup for service from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) are assigned \t\t\tone “master” account – with the option to add up to five or ten or more \t\t\temail accounts at no extra charge. And having your first name right \t\t\tup there in lights is pretty tempting – but we’re advising you \t\t\tagainst it. We’ll tell you why in a minute, but first we have to \t\t\tshow you.<\/p>\n

Most ISPs will assign you a master email address which uses the name \t\t\tof record on your account with them. For instance: let’s say your \t\t\tname is Linda McAllister (and if it is, sorry about that, we just \t\t\tmade it up actually. It’s a nice name, Linda). Your ISP might assign \t\t\tyou a master email account such as \t\t\t linda.m@yourwonderfulisp.com<\/a> . That’s very nice, isn’t it? \t\t\tHmm, however …when spammers get a hold of it, and most likely, \t\t\tunless you’re very careful with it, some will, you’ll start getting \t\t\tspam that goes something like this:<\/p>\n

Well, in the hubbub of everyday life, you’re bound to have a lapse \t\t\tin good judgment – and you might just think that any email addressed \t\t\tto “Dear Linda” is personal. Hey, don’t laugh, it happens every day. \t\t\tOf course once you click the link, the spammer knows your address \t\t\tis good and valid email addresses like yours are worth mucho dinero \t\t\tto spammers. So, now, your cool email address will be sold on CD, \t\t\talong with millions of other valid email addresses, to hundreds of \t\t\tother sp\/ammers. Ut oh! And, pretty soon, when you check you’re \t\t\temail, your once pristine inbox will be overflowing with sp*am – and \t\t\tyou’re going to be seeing a lot worse than anti-baggy eye emails.<\/p>\n

Spammers might be lowlife scumbags, but they’re not stupid. They \t\t\tuse sophisticated scripts and programs that can break apart email \t\t\taddresses and cut off the .m@yourwonderfulisp.com and extract the \t\t\tfirst name “Linda” from it- and use it to make the spam look very \t\t\tpersonal.<\/p>\n

So, why not save your “master” account with your ISP for personal \t\t\tbanking and online ordering only. These types of transactions are \t\t\tdone on secure servers, therefore the likelihood of your email \t\t\taddress being scraped or harvested from them is almost nil. Instead, \t\t\tcreate another account with some odd, but memorable prefix like \t\t\t slurpybean@yourwonderfulisp.com<\/a> and use it for your normal \t\t\teveryday emails.<\/p>\n
