\n<\/strong>Hi Cheryl.\u00a0\u00a0Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 have a feature called Print to PDF.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s our tutorial showing you how to convert any document or picture into a PDF file.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tutorial is for Windows 10 but Print to PDF works the same on Windows 11 too.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI have considered purchasing a senior repair from you. But my internet is very slow. I am afraid that if I needed help and you started to repair my PC my internet would go down in the middle of the repair. I can have a connection, then no connection, then a connection. This goes on all the time. My PC is in direct line with my modem. My connection does the same thing on my tablet and my phone, so I know it is my internet. I keep waiting for better service in my area but so far nothing. I would like to be able to use your help but this would be almost impossible. Keep up the good work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Patsy. If your internet cuts in and out, you should call your internet provider and have them make sure your modem is working correctly. When modems (and routers) get older they start dropping the connection. And usually, the dropouts become more and more frequent. Your service provider can run tests on your modem from their location \u2013 they won\u2019t need to come to your house to test it.<\/span><\/p>\n

We can work with slow connections down to about 2 Mbps. The only way we\u2019ll know for sure is if you do a speed test. It\u2019s easy to do. Just go to www.fast.com<\/a> and wait for a few seconds and it will show your download speed first. That\u2019s all we need to know is your download speed measured in Megabits per second (Mbps). If it\u2019s at least 2 Mbps we can connect. Anything lower is a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

So just let us know what your Internet provider tells you and what Fast.com says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If your internet provider finds no problem with your hardware (modem\/router\/lines) it may be your wireless network adapter. If that\u2019s the problem you can easily fix that yourself by buying and USB wireless adapter and plugging it into a USB port and following the instruction that came with the adapter.\u00a0 See this page to learn more about USB wireless adapters.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Janice. There is a website that can do amazing things with image edges, including solid borders, stylized borders, faded borders, frames, and all kinds of other photo effects \u2013 all without installing anything. It works great, it\u2019s free, and may soon be a Cloudeight site pick.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s called Lunapic and you can check it out here<\/a>. When you first land on the page, click on \u201cBorders\u201d at the top and you\u2019ll see a drop-down menu with all the border options available. And with each option, you\u2019ll see a sample of what that option looks like.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can do a lot of other stuff too\u2026 I played around only with the border & text effects, and here are just a few examples<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Clyde. No matter how much Microsoft wants you to update to Windows 11, right now, it will not force you to do so. You have until October 14, 2025, to use Windows 10 safely and still get updates and security patches.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you do decide to update to Windows 11, your programs and your desktop will remain the same \u2013 but Windows 11 has a different \u201clook\u201d so your taskbar will be centered rather than aligned to the left. You can change it so it\u2019s left-aligned if you want to, but by default, it will be centered.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a lot of changes, especially with some of the Windows apps such as Settings, File Explorer, etc., but the \u201clook\u201d of your desktop should not change other than the taskbar.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Beth. Before we answer your question we want our readers to know that we’re including Windows 10 in our answer for our friends who are using Windows 10.<\/span><\/p>\n

To create a bootable USB drive, you will need a USB drive that is at least 8GB in size and a copy of the Windows 10 or 11 installation media. You can download installation media from Microsoft from the following links:<\/span><\/p>\n

Windows 10 (for those who are reading this and using Windows 10).<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Bill. Your email was not compromised; your email password was. Security programs and password managers don’t have anything to do with hackers breaching websites and collecting usernames and passwords. Security breaches occur on Websites that log into and have nothing to do with your computer, your security software, or your password manager.<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, when Equifax was breached, criminals stole user information and passwords from Equifax, not from personal computers. The same is true of any breach you read about in the news. If your information is stored by a site that is breached, then your information could be compromised.<\/span><\/p>\n

You really can’t prevent companies on the web from being hacked, all you can do is use very strong passwords, and if your email passwords are stolen in an online data breach, change your password immediately. It’s also a good idea to change your passwords for sites that possess your personal info every few months.<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s nothing you can install on your computer or that you could have done to prevent your email address or other personal information from being stolen by hackers from a site that you entrusted with your personal info.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Robyn. WPS Office is no longer free, we\u2019re sorry to say. If you\u2019re having problems with Open Office, you might want to give LibreOffice a try. It\u2019s free and is one of our recommended free alternatives to MS Office.<\/span><\/p>\n

LibreOffice is our top choice of free programs that can do almost everything MS Office \/ MS 365 can do. This suite has alternatives for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.<\/span><\/p>\n

The LibreOffice suite has six programs: Writer (Word), Impress (PowerPoint), Calc (Excel), Base (Access), Math, and Draw. The biggest drawback to LibreOffice is that you can\u2019t pick and choose which of these you want to install \u2013 you have to install the entire suite.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGood morning to my favorite Computer Geeks. I have a question about Gmail. As you know, attachments are a source for many of our computer problems. I would like to find a way to filter out any emails that have attachments and put them in a folder that I can review before opening. Also, I am getting a lot of spam emails that don\u2019t even have my Gmail address in them. For example, my email is k***G***@gmail.com. Emails with the address CHARLESe9@aol.com come into my email inbox. If I wasn\u2019t careful and didn\u2019t look at the address, I might have opened it. How does this happen? Thanks for all you do.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Charles. Thanks! You can create message rules in Gmail for just about anything including attachments. If you want to filter emails that have attachments just do this.<\/span><\/p>\n

Highlight an email that has an attachment, click on the 3 vertical dots that appear in the menu above the inbox, and select \u201cFilter messages like these\u201d from the drop-down menu.<\/span><\/p>\n

After you do that you\u2019ll see the following dialog. Tick the box next to \u201cHas attachment\u201d then click \u201cCreate filter\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, from the dialog that appears select the option to apply the label. A label in the Gmail world is a folder in anybody else\u2019s world. So all mail that has an attachment will be labeled that way. A lot of spam is sent this way, and a lot of people don\u2019t know how to send emails to multiple email addresses without exposing everyone else\u2019s address.<\/span><\/p>\n

Barb\u2019s Windows 10 computer is having sleep issues<\/strong><\/span>
\nI am trying to get my computer to go to sleep rather than shutting it down every night. Before the last update, it worked well for me, but now it does not. Any ideas on how I can fix it? I have another much slower computer and it was not messed up with the update as was the main one that I use for most things. I don\u2019t understand how this can happen like that. You people are so good at helping fix all these silly things. m I don\u2019t know what people who don\u2019t follow you make out. I know I would be lost. Thanks so much for your help. \nHi Barb. Thank you. It seems that Windows 10\u2019s \u201cSleep\u201d has never worked the way it should. But anyway\u2026 there\u2019s no point in putting a computer to sleep unless it\u2019s a laptop and you\u2019re moving from place to place. Windows 10\u2019s sleep is a hybrid of sleep and hibernation and many people report problems with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

We set our computers to never sleep and to dim the screen after 10 minutes of inactivity. And that puts the computer into an idle state, but not sleep. The monitor\/screen uses most of the power so dimming the monitor\/screen after so many minutes of not being used is a great way to save power. If you do it our way, you don\u2019t have to worry about sleep mode and you still save power. Depending on your monitor or laptop screen it can use 100 to 200 watts, whereas the computer\/laptop itself when idle uses only 7 to 15 watts (about the same as or a bit more than a nightlight.).<\/span><\/p>\n

We do practice what we preach. Here is how I have my laptop power settings. I leave my laptop plugged in 99% of the time. This laptop is over 7 years old. I have been settings this way since the early days of Windows 7 and it has never shortened the life of my hard drives or computers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Assuming you\u2019re not using a laptop, right-click on your start button, click Power Options, and do this:<\/span><\/p>\n

Under Screen, \u201cTurn off after 10 minutes\u201d.<\/span>
\nUnder \u201cSleep,\u201d set it to \u201cNever\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

If it is a laptop, under Screen, set it to 5 minutes when on battery and 15 minutes when plugged in.<\/span><\/p>\n

And under \u201cPower\u201d change it to \u201cPC goes to sleep after 10 minutes\u201d when on battery, and \u201cNever\u201d when it\u2019s plugged in.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you want to try to fix your sleep mode, do this.<\/span><\/p>\n

Right-click on your start button and choose \u201cPower options\u201d. Then change whatever settings you have for sleep to something different. In other words, if you have it set to sleep after 10 minutes, change it to 15 minutes -just make sure it\u2019s different. Then restart your computer. Most of the time, just changing the sleep timer works. If this doesn\u2019t work, there are more complicated solutions. Let us know if you need more help.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judy wants to know if this program will speed up her Internet connection<\/strong><\/span>
\nRecently, I did a speed test on my laptop using speedtest.org. Anyway, my download was 5.17 Mbps and the upload was .51 Mbps. Not very good but much better than dial-up. The site pointed out a file to download called SG TCPOptimizer 4, which is supposed to provide an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing the Internet connection. I wonder if you know of it and if it can make a difference. I don\u2019t want to put it on my computer for fear that it is Spyware. I value your opinion. Thanks for your time. Judy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHi Judy. It won\u2019t hurt your computer to try it. And it\u2019s free. And it may increase your speed but only nominally (maybe a few tenths of Mb). Read this honest review here. But whether you have 5.17 Mbps or 5.5 Mbps, you\u2019re not really going to notice a difference. The only way you\u2019re going to get noticeably faster speeds is by using an ISP that can provide it.. or paying extra if your ISP offers a \u201ctiered\u201d service.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not spyware, but I think is more of a psychological fix than one that will make a real difference.<\/span><\/p>\n
