While still not 100% accurate, it\u2019s reliable enough that you can use it to dictate recipes, emails, reminders, notes, essays, short stories, journals, and even angry letters to the editor!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"auto-style1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">To use the new and improved dictation feature in Windows 10 and Windows 11, press and hold down the Windows Key and tap the H key. Place your cursor in (almost) any text field and start talking. It works with many apps, including Microsoft Word, Notepad, WordPad, Gmail, Outlook, and Outlook.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Using Windows 10 Dictation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Use the Windows key shortcut Windows key + H to begin.\u00a0 Click the \u201cmicrophone\u201d icon in the dictation bar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"auto-style1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"auto-style1\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/windows10-dictation0.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Tips by Cloudeight - Dictation in Windows 10\" width=\"404\" height=\"49\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"auto-style1\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/windows10-dictation01.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Tips by Cloudeight - Dictation in Windows 10\" width=\"408\" height=\"65\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When it\u2019s done initializing, you\u2019ll see \u201cListening,\u201d and then you can start talking. Here\u2019s an example of Windows 10 Dictation being used with Notepad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"auto-style1\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/windows10-dictation.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Tips by Cloudeight - Dictation in Windows 10\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"auto-style1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As you can see above, Windows 10 Dictation is \u201cListening\u2026\u201d and you can see what I\u2019ve dictated so far.\u00a0 You can add punctuation by saying a comma, period, semicolon, exclamation point, etc.\u00a0 And if you want a new line, say, \u201cnew line\u201d. If you want a new paragraph, say \u201cnew paragraph\u201d. You get the idea. The more you use Windows Dictation, the better it gets at understanding your voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"auto-style1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When you\u2019re done dictating, just say \u201cStop dictating\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Using Microsoft Speech Services (dictation) in Windows 11<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Dictation gets even better, more accurate, and more fluid in Windows 11. It even gets a new name, \u201cMicrosoft Speech Services\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2023\/dictate11.png\" alt=\"Windows 11 Speech Services - Dictation with a fancier name. Cloudeight InfoAve\" width=\"394\" height=\"478\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">But it works the same way it does in Windows 10.\u00a0 Open Windows Speech Services in Windows 11 by using the Windows key + H shortcut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We recommend that you click on the settings icon and turn on \u201cVoice typing launcher\u201d, \u201cAutomatic punctuation\u201d, and select and adjust your microphone \u2013 and make sure your microphone volume is set at 80% or higher \u2013 you don\u2019t want to have to yell, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2023\/dictate3.png\" alt=\"Windows 11 Speech Services Settings - Cloudeight InfoAve\" width=\"480\" height=\"593\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Here\u2019s Windows Speech Services opening in Windows 11. To begin voice typing, click the microphone icon, or as Microsoft puts it, the \u201cmic button\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"auto-style1\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2025\/11dictate.png\" alt=\"Windows Tips by Cloudeight - Dictation in Windows 10\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I put Windows Speech Services in Windows 11 to the test using a poem by Robert Frost called &#8216;Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening&#8221;. I used Windows Notepad for this example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"> I\u2019ll give Windows Speech Service an A-minus; it only made a few minor errors in capitalization. Why it thought the words, little, horse, and queer needed to be capitalize, I do not know. However, it would be easy to correct, and still be much faster than typing &#8212; well, at least MY typing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"auto-style1\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2025\/dictation11b.png\" alt=\"Windows Tips by Cloudeight - Dictation in Windows 10\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">And, like Windows 10\u2019s Dictation feature, you can use Windows 11&#8217;s Microsoft Voice Services to type reminders, notes, recipes, journals, essays, stories, lists, emails, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Here\u2019s an email I wrote using Microsoft Speech Services\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"auto-style1\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/win11-dictation3.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Tips by Cloudeight - Dictation in Windows 10\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Unfortunately (and predictably), Darcy ignored my email, and I didn\u2019t get my raise. But I can\u2019t blame that on poor dictation by Microsoft Speech Services!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">When you first start using Microsoft Speech Services in Windows 11, it may ask if you want to contribute your voice clips to improve Speech Services. You can choose \u201cYes\u201d to contribute your voice clips, or \u201cNo\u201d if you don\u2019t want to contribute. If you do choose to contribute, they won\u2019t be linked to you, your computer, or your IP address \u2013 they\u2019ll be anonymously added to the database of voice clips that will help make Windows speech services (dictation) even better. And the better it gets, the more talking and less typing you\u2019ll do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"auto-style1\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2021\/win11-dictation2.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 Tips by Cloudeight - Dictation in Windows 10\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Save time. Talk instead of typing. Windows dictation (Speech services) is better than ever and can save you a lot of time\u2026 whether you\u2019re using Windows 10 or Windows 11. All you have to do is take the time to learn to use it.\u00a0 Once you do, you might find you\u2019re a faster talker than a typist!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Why Type When You Can Talk?
