Oh, how the geeks love to throw that word around as if it&#8217;s some arcane secret for only those &#8220;in-the-know&#8221; &#8212; i.e., other computer geeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you are not a geek, think of benchmarking as a fitness test for your computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you wanted to know how fit you were, you might time yourself walking a mile, see how many push-ups you can do, or check how much weight you can lift. Or&#8230; in my case, how fast I can get to the refrigerator for an ice-cold non-alcoholic beer. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">You\u2019d end up with a set of numbers that you could compare to your results from last year or to some rippled athlete&#8217;s stats&#8230; or compare them to Darcy&#8217;s scores &#8211; email her!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Computer benchmarking is the same thing &#8211; only it&#8217;s a fitness test for your computer.\u00a0 Benchmarking is a series of standardized tests that push your computer&#8217;s &#8220;muscles&#8221; (its processor, memory, and storage) to their limits to learn how well they perform under stress. It gives you a score that tells you if your PC is a top-tier athlete or more of a couch potato.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>WinSAT: Your Computer Built-in Fitness Checker<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Your Windows PC has a built-in fitness checker &#8211; a benchmarking tool anyone can use. It&#8217;s called WinSAT. WinSAT stands for <i data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"18\">Windows System Assessment Tool<\/i>. Back in the days of Windows 7, this tool powered the &#8220;Windows Experience Index,&#8221; which gave users computer performance scores from 1.0 to 7.9 so geeks could have something to brag about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you want to see your PC\u2019s &#8220;fitness&#8221; scores, follow these simple steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"14\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Open the &#8220;Command Prompt&#8221;: Click your Start button, type<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Right-click on it and select Run as Administrator.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,1,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Type the following and press Enter:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-path-to-node=\"14,1,1\">\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,1,1,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><code data-path-to-node=\"14,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><strong>winsat formal<\/strong><\/code><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,2,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Your computer might flicker, and you\u2019ll see lines of text scrolling by. It\u2019s testing how fast your hard drive can read files and how quickly your brain (the CPU) can crunch numbers. Don&#8217;t touch anything until it finishes!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2026\/winsat.png\" alt=\"Benchmarking with WinSAT-Cloudeight InfoAve\" width=\"599\" height=\"398\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Once the test finishes, the window might just sit there. To see your results in a way that actually makes sense, Windows stores them in a hidden report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The easiest &#8220;non-geek&#8221; way to see your score without digging through messy files is to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"19\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"19,0,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Right-click your Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"19,1,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Type this command and hit Enter:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-path-to-node=\"19,1,1\">\n<p data-path-to-node=\"19,1,1,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><code data-path-to-node=\"19,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><strong>Get-CimInstance Win32_WinSAT<\/strong><\/code><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">A list of numbers will appear. The scores usually range from 1.0 to 9.9.\u00a0 Here is what they actually mean in plain English:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">CPUScore: How fast your computer &#8220;thinks&#8221; (Processor).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">D3DScore: Your computer\u2019s ability to handle 3D gaming and heavy video.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">DiskScore: How fast your computer can open files (Hard Drive speed).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">GraphicsScore: How smoothly your computer handles basic things like program windows and the taskbar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">MemoryScore: How well your computer can multitask (RAM).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">WinSPRLevel: This is your Base Score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/images\/2026\/winsat1.png\" alt=\"Benchmarking with WinSAT- Cloudeight InfoAve\" width=\"599\" height=\"504\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"citation-74\">Your <\/span><span class=\"citation-74\">computer&#8217;s score is shown next to WinSPR Level<\/span><span class=\"citation-74\"> and is always equal to your <\/span><span class=\"citation-74\">l<\/span><span class=\"citation-74\">owest<\/span><span class=\"citation-74 citation-end-74\"> individual score.<\/span> This is because a computer is only as fast as its slowest part\u2014like a sports car with bad tires, the tires limit the whole car!<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Anything over 9 is a powerhouse &#8211; a geek&#8217;s machine. Anything lower? Well&#8230; if you&#8217;re not a geek, it probably won&#8217;t mean much to you. But let&#8217;s say this: Your computer should have a score of over 4.5. Otherwise, your computer might always be a little slow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"citation-74\">My cheap under $300 laptop scored 6.7. <\/span> Not bad.
