How Clickbait Wastes Your Time (and Puts You at Risk)

Did that headline grab your attention? Did you feel a small flicker of hope that maybe there’s a magic button you just haven’t found yet?<\/span><\/p>\n

Don’t feel bad if it did. That’s exactly what it was designed to do. And while there’s no secret trick to double your PC’s speed, there is something worth talking about \u2014 how clickbait is cluttering up the internet and quietly putting your security at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is Clickbait?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Clickbait is any headline or image designed with one goal in mind: to make you click. Not to inform you. Not to tell the truth. Just to get that click.

\nIt works by exploiting something called the “curiosity gap.” It gives you just enough information to make you curious \u2014 “You won’t believe what this ’80s child star looks like now!” \u2014 but holds back the answer until you’ve clicked through a slideshow packed with ads.<\/span><\/p>\n

Multiply that by millions of clicks, and it adds up fast. In 2026, with AI capable of cranking out thousands of these junk articles in seconds, it has become a multi-billion-dollar industry. The quality of the content is completely beside the point. All that matters is that you landed on the page.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s More Than Just Annoying<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Most clickbait is harmless \u2014 just a waste of a few minutes. But some of it is genuinely dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n

The “Your Computer Is Infected” Trick<\/strong>. Some clickbait claims your drivers are outdated or your PC is crawling with viruses, then nudges you to download software that is itself the problem. This is called “scareware,” and it’s more common than you’d think.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hover before you click<\/strong>. On a desktop, hovering your mouse over a link (without clicking) will show you the destination URL in the bottom corner of your browser. If the address looks odd or unfamiliar, trust that instinct.<\/span><\/p>\n

Use good security software.\u00a0<\/strong> A good anti-malware program like Emsisoft,<\/a><\/span> running in the background, can catch threats the moment a bad link tries to do something it shouldn’t \u2014 even if you click accidentally.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a headline promises a miracle cure, a secret the government doesn’t want you to know, or a way to double your computer’s speed with one click \u2014 it’s a lie. Real information doesn’t need to bait you.<\/span><\/p>\n
