Beware of Those Medicare Prepaid Debit Card Scams<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

If you’re older,\u00a0 live in the USA, and watch TV at all, you’ve probably seen a version of this Medicare scam commercial promising a free prepaid debit card you can use for groceries, gasoline, and other personal expenses.\u00a0 The “prepaid debit card” scam\u2014often referred to by scammers as the Medicare Flex Card or Flex Spend Card scam\u2014is a highly deceptive scheme targeting older adults.<\/span><\/p>\n

The scam works by taking a tiny<\/em> grain of truth and twisting it into different versions of identity theft<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Grain of Truth<\/span><\/h3>\n

Some private Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) do legitimately offer prepaid debit cards to their members to help pay for specific things like dental copays, over-the-counter medicine, or healthy groceries. However, Original Medicare (the government program) does not issue these cards.<\/span><\/p>\n

How the Scam Works<\/span><\/h3>\n

Scammers use aggressive TV commercials, internet ads, social media posts, or direct cold calls claiming that “the government is giving all seniors a free $2,800 (or similar large amount) prepaid flex (debit) card for groceries and gas”.<\/span><\/p>\n

When people call the number or click the link in the ad, the trap springs in one of three ways:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. \n

    Identity Theft & Medicare Fraud:<\/b> The agent on the phone claims they just need to “verify eligibility” or “activate the card”.<\/span> They ask for a Social Security number, bank routing numbers, or a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).<\/span> Once they have these, they can steal the victim’s identity or file thousands of dollars in fake medical claims under their name.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    The Sneaky Bait-and-Switch:<\/b> In many cases, the person on the phone is a predatory, uncertified insurance broker. By “agreeing” to accept the free debit card, the victim unknowingly gives the broker permission to sign them out of Original Medicare and enroll them in a completely different private Medicare Advantage plan.<\/span> The victim usually doesn’t find out until they go to see their regular doctor and learn their doctor is now “out of network”.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Upfront Fee Extortion:<\/b> Some scammers tell victims the card is ready but requires a tiny “activation fee” or “shipping fee” of $5 or $10, asking for a credit card number. They take the card info, drain the account, and never send anything.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    How to Avoid Being Scammed<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n

    1. Medicare never cold-calls. <\/b><\/span><\/b>The official Medicare program will <\/span>never<\/span><\/i> call you out of the blue to offer you money, products, or cards, nor will they demand your number over the phone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    2. Never trust a television or internet ad promising cash cards.<\/span><\/b> If a specific Medicare Advantage plan offers a grocery or wellness card, it must be thoroughly laid out in their official annual plan documents, not an aggressive pop-up ad or late-night commercial.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    3. Call your plan directly.<\/b> <\/span>If you have a Medicare Advantage plan and want to know if you actually qualify for a grocery or flex benefit, hang up the phone and call the customer service number printed on the back of your Medicare Advantage insurance card.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
