The new sanitization option works differently. Instead of just erasing the surface, it sends a direct command to your computer&#8217;s storage drive telling it to securely wipe all data at the hardware level before installing a fresh copy of Windows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Microsoft designed this specific feature for PCs that are being:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"7\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Sold to a new owner online<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,1,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Given away to friends, family, or charity<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,2,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Returned to a store or leasing company<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,3,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Dropped off for electronics recycling<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"8\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Permanent Means Permanent<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Microsoft warns that this new wiping process is completely irreversible. Once it starts, your photos, documents, and personal settings are gone forever. If you ever use it, double-check that you\u2019ve backed up everything you care about to an external drive or cloud storage first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It\u2019s also worth keeping in mind that the feature relies on your computer\u2019s hard drive correctly carrying out the erase command. Most modern drives handle this easily, but performance can vary depending on the age and brand of your hardware.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"11\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Coming Soon to Your PC?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you check your settings today, you won&#8217;t see this option just yet. Tech site <i data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"80\">Windows Latest<\/i> first spotted the feature in an experimental test version of Windows 11 (Build 26340.9502).<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Microsoft regularly tests new ideas with Windows Insiders before deciding whether to release them to everyone. They have noted that this feature could be tweaked or changed before a final release\u2014or it might take some time to roll out to standard PCs.
