A recently discovered Android vulnerability called the “SMS of Death” (CVE-2026-58882) brings back those memories, but with a serious twist. The “SMS of Death” exploit can crash smartphones simply by sending a specially designed text message, without requiring the recipient to open it or take any action at all. Unlike standard text scams that rely on recipients clicking a bad link, this exploit requires no action from the user.

How Does It Work?

The flaw exists within Android’s telephony code—specifically how the operating system handles background data messages (known as WAP Push messages). An attacker only needs your phone number to send a tiny, specially crafted data text message. The crash happens in the background before the text ever lands in your messaging app inbox. You won’t even see a text pop up. The system handling your phone signal crashes. It silently drops active calls, severs cellular connection, and in severe cases (or if targeted with multiple messages), forces the phone into an endless reboot loop.

Who Is Affected?

Supported Phones (Android 14 through 17): Google has rolled out patches in recent system updates to block these malformed messages. Older Devices (Android 12 & 13): Older devices that no longer receive official operating system patches are left vulnerable to the exploit.

How to Protect Your Device

Check for Updates Immediately

Go to Settings > System > System Update (or Software Update) and install any pending updates right away.

Restart Your Phone

Once the update finishes downloading, complete the restart to ensure the new telephony drivers are active.

Help Friends and Family Members

Older phones used by friends and/or family members often sit with uninstalled updates for months.
