While Chrome has been leapfrogging the incumbent Internet Explorer on weekends for some time now, the week of May 14th–20th marks the first time Chrome has averaged a higher traffic share over a full seven-day stretch.

We’ve mentioned before that Chrome is the most popular browser visiting The Verge, but that’s far from the case in the rest of North America, where Internet Explorer still has the lead — 37 to 26 percent…”

Five years ago, Internet Explorer was used by over 70% of people in North America. And while it’s still used by 37% of the people in North America that’s a huge decline. Considering that Microsoft has control of Windows and that Internet Explorer comes pre-installed on every Windows computer sold in North America (but not in other regions of the world because of anti-trust suits) it’s shocking that so many people are going out of their way to install a different browser.

EB and I have differing opinions but one thing she doesn’t argue is that Chrome is far faster on Windows 7 than Internet Explorer.

I’m TC and I’m a big fan of Google Chrome because it just works. You don’t get silly warnings or unnecessary menu bars appearing telling you that your browser will run better if you disable your add-ins. Duh! Really? The other day I was working on a computer via our Cloudeight Direct Computer Car service and the lady had only Internet Explorer installed on Windows 7. I had to download a program for her computer so I used Internet Explorer to do it. I haven’t used Internet Explorer for anything but to check Web pages on our site for compatibility. Anyway, after plodding along with Windows Explorer and pushing past all its warning and advisories….I got fed up and asked the lady if I could install Chrome on her computer. I did so. A few minutes later I had the program I to use installed and I had converted her form a IE user to a Chrome user.

It’s your computer and you can use whatever browser you like – but you should at least install Chrome and use it from time to time. You’ll find it much faster (especially on Windows Vista and Windows 7) and more pleasant to use than IE.

I’m really sorry that IE has decided to become the Norton of Web Browsers. Luckily I’ve been using Chrome as my default browser since Chrome as released and I’ve never looked back. And before that I was a Firefox fan — but Firefox decided to grow up and try to be another Internet Explorer — plus it’s really resource intensive after it’s been running for while. Still, I think, Firefox is a better choice than IE.

You can get Google Chrome at http://google.com/chrome/ .

Give it a try and tell me how you like it. I think you’ll like it more than you think — especially once you get used to its minimalistic interface.

According to StatCounter as reported in this The Verge article: “…For the first week in history, Google Chrome is the most-used browser in the world, according to StatCounter.
