We\u2019re betting that 90% of you don\u2019t have a clue what this key is or what it\u2019s for\u2026and if you\u2019re one of those 90% don\u2019t worry it. We had forgotten about it too, until TC was doing his yearly keyboard cleaning \u2013 getting rid cracker crumbs and coffee spills and other gunk \u2013 and notice the application key he had forgotten about years before.<\/p>\n
So what\u2019s the first thing you do? You press it. What happens depends on when you press it and what you\u2019re doing when you press it.<\/p>\n
If an application is open, such as Metapad (which is what I use when I\u2019m writing this newsletter — pressing the application key is the same as clicking \u201cEdit\u201d on the program\u2019s toolbar.<\/p>\n
If you have no programs open and you\u2019re sitting there staring at your desktop and you press the application key you\u2019ll get the Desktop properties menu \u2013 the same menu you\u2019d see if you right-clicked the desktop and chose \u201cProperties\u201d. If your taskbar is in focus and your press the application key, the menu you get will be the same as the menu you\u2019d get if you right-clicked the taskbar and chose \u201cProperties\u201d.<\/p>\n
Which makes us wonder why they call it an \u201cApplication Key\u201d, why not \u201cProperties Key\u201d?<\/p>\n
We don\u2019t know why but we do know that if you play around with your application key and learn how to use it, you can save mouse clicks. Many of you like mouse clicks but many others don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Anyway, the most overlooked key on your keyboard is one that performs several functions. And now, at least, you know what some of them are. Play around with it, maybe you\u2019ll find more uses for the oft-forgotten application key.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
