Windows 8.1 Update 1 Coming April 8, 2014
\n<\/strong>Windows 8x<\/p>\n

On the day Windows XP dies, Microsoft will release Windows 8.1 Update 1 which will make Windows 8 more like the operating system it just laid to rest. Interesting.<\/p>\n

While Windows 8.1 Update 1 won’t have a start menu, it will have a lot of updates geared toward those who prefer to use a mouse and keyboard – and those who don’t have touchscreen computers and have to use a mouse and a keyboard.<\/p>\n

Windows 8.1 Update 1 (why don’t they just call it Windows 8.2?) will feature dedicated power and search buttons on the Start screen. For those using the desktop and a mouse and keyboard, Windows 8.1 Update 1 brings new right-click context menus, and desktop users will be able to pin Modern (Metro) apps to the taskbar. More good news if you’re a desktop user: you’ll actually be able close apps or switch between apps easily – for those who haven’t used Windows 8x apps currently have no “X”, taskbar, title bar or any other obvious way to close them, so adding a title bar and a taskbar to “Modern” apps will be greatly appreciated by those who use a mouse and keyboard.<\/p>\n

It is interesting that on the day Microsoft kills off the most loved Windows of all, it is slowly dismantling its least-loved Windows of all to make it more like Windows XP — and the best is yet to come.<\/p>\n

At a recent developer’s conference, Microsoft presented attendees with a sneak peak at a future update for Windows 8x that will bring back the Start Menu. In the screen shot above, you can see the changes coming to Windows 8x including the new start menu. You’ll notice that the new Windows 8x start menu looks very much like the Windows 7 start menu, except that the Windows 8x start menu will also show “Live tiles” alongside desktop apps. The update will also make it possible to run “Modern apps” on the desktop. Microsoft said this future update will be available later this year.<\/p>\n

So Microsoft spent years developing Windows 8 and now it’s spending months and months tearing it down and rebuilding it to make Windows 8x more like Windows XP and Windows 7.
