{"id":7487,"date":"2014-04-29T10:15:04","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T14:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/?p=7487"},"modified":"2014-04-29T10:15:04","modified_gmt":"2014-04-29T14:15:04","slug":"homeland-security-dont-use-internet-explorer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thundercloud.net\/infoave\/new\/homeland-security-dont-use-internet-explorer\/","title":{"rendered":"Homeland Security: Don&#8217;t Use Internet Explorer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1>Homeland Security: Don&#8217;t use IE due to bug<\/h1>\n<\/blockquote>\n<section style=\"color: #302c22;\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<div style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"image-credit-wrap\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 The U.S. Department of Homeland security is\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #990000;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.kb.cert.org\/vuls\/id\/222929\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kb.cert.org\/vuls\/id\/222929\">advising<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0Americans not to use the Internet Explorer Web browser until a fix is found for a serious security flaw that came to light over the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">The bug was\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #990000;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.fireeye.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/2014\/04\/new-zero-day-exploit-targeting-internet-explorer-versions-9-through-11-identified-in-targeted-attacks.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fireeye.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/2014\/04\/new-zero-day-exploit-targeting-internet-explorer-versions-9-through-11-identified-in-targeted-attacks.html\">announced<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday by FireEye Research Labs, an Internet security software company based in Milpitas, Calif.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">&#8220;We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem,&#8221; the Department of Homeland Security&#8217;s United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team said in a post Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">It recommended that users and administrators &#8220;consider employing an alternative Web browser until an official update is available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">The security flaw allows malicious hackers to get around security protections in the Windows operating system. They then can be infected when visiting a compromised website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Because the hack uses a corrupted Adobe Flash file to attack the victim&#8217;s computer, users can avoid it by turning off Adobe Flash.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">&#8220;The attack will not work without Adobe Flash,&#8221; FireEye said. &#8220;Disabling the Flash plugin within IE will prevent the exploit from functioning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">While the bug affects all versions of Internet Explorer 6 through 11 it is currently targeting IE9 and IE10, FireEye stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">The attacks do not appear to be widespread at this time.
