When do the data points and inferences that can be drawn from it strongly suggest, say, trips to a psychiatrist, a mosque, an abortion clinic, a strip club or an AIDS treatment center?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/header>\n<section style=\"color: #302c22;\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<div style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">The answer, according to\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #990000;\" title=\"The paper published in the NYU Journal of Law and Liberty\" href=\"http:\/\/static.squarespace.com\/static\/514e1ca0e4b04c6ad1834313\/t\/536c75d9e4b0ffdd30e5a5ab\/1399616985724\/Hutchins.pdf\">a new research paper<\/a>, is about a week, when the data portrait of a person becomes sufficiently detailed to qualify as an \u201cunreasonable search\u201d and a potential violation of an individual\u2019s Fourth Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">The research paper, a collaboration of computer scientists and lawyers, wades into the debate over the legal and policing implications of modern data collection and analysis technology. It explores what in legal circles is called the \u201cmosaic theory\u201d of the Fourth Amendment, which essentially states that when linked and analyzed by software, a much richer picture emerges from combined information than from discrete data points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not the direct observation,\u201d said Steven M.
