Every minute you spend on it you’ll be helping feed a hungry person somewhere in this world. The gap between the very rich and the very poor has become deeper and wider than ever before. Most of us, thankfully, are somewhere in between. Even if you don’t have much money you can help someone who has even less, just by using this site.

Here’s the concept of FreeRice.com: It’s a vocabulary quiz (other subjects are available too – but we’re focusing on the English Vocabulary section today). For each word you get right, the site’s owner promises to donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. I personally spent – I don’t know how much time on this site – and was able to go over 10,000 grains of rice and my score vocabulary level was 50 (good thing they didn’t make it a grammar test, isn’t it? Don’t worry, they have an English Grammar quiz too, which I avoided for obvious reasons). I benefited from FreeRice because I learned quite a few new words, and I’m sure the 10,000 grains of rice will help feed someone who is hungry. And that’s a good thing.

If you like challenges and you like helping people, you’ll really love today’s Cloudeight Site Pick.

Here’s some information from the site’s owner:

“…How does the FreeRice vocabulary program work?

FreeRice has a custom database containing thousands of words at varying degrees of difficulty. There are words appropriate for people just learning English and words that will challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are thousands of words for students, business people, homemakers, doctors, truck drivers, retired people… everyone!

FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning can take place.

There are 55 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get much above level 48….

…For each word you get right, we donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.

FreeRice has two goals:

Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.

Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.

Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.

Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you….”

Now, if you feel this site isn’t your cup of tea, please take a few minutes to visit FreeRice.com anyway. There are other tests of skill besides the vocabulary – like art, chemistry, math, English grammar, and languages.

We think you will find yourself playing the vocabulary quiz for more than a few minutes. You’ll be helping yourself and others too. It’s a great idea, a great site, and a great cause. We think FreeRice.com is one of the best sites ever.

You’re invited to visit, enjoy, and learn – from today’s Cloudeight Site Pick, FreeRice.com

FreeRice.com is one of the most interesting sites we’ve ever featured.
