Scam Alert: The Fake “Official Social Security Letter”

Social Secuirty Scam Alert

Just when you think the scammers couldn’t get any more devious, they’ve found a way into your mailbox.

The Office of the U.S. Inspector General is sounding the alarm on a new wave of fraudulent letters. These aren’t your typical poorly-spelled, fake-looking emails; they look official, they look urgent, and they are designed to scare you into handing over your most sensitive personal information.

The Anatomy of the Scam

These letters often claim your Social Security benefits—or even your Social Security card—are about to be suspended. Some even cite fake Supreme Court cases to add a layer of “legal” intimidation. The goal? To steal your identity, drain your bank account, or even snatch the deed to your home.

How to Spot this Scam in Your Mailbox

Real government agencies don’t bully or threaten you. You are being scammed if the letter:

  • Threatens you: The real SSA will never threaten to “sue” or “arrest” you over the phone or by mail.
  • Demands “Right Now” action: Scammers rely on panic. If they say you must act immediately, take a breath and slow down.
  • Asks for “Odd” payments: The government does not accept gift cards, wire transfers, or Cryptocurrency. If they ask for a Vanilla Visa or a Bitcoin transfer, it’s a scam—period.

Outsmarting the Scoundrels

  • Verify, Don’t Comply: If you’re worried, call the real SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213. Don’t use any phone number printed on the suspicious letter.
  • Keep Your Cool: Remember, your Social Security card cannot be “suspended.” That’s a total fabrication.
  • DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL: Do not reply, do not call the number on the letter, and do not “verify” your info. Just put it where it belongs: the garbage.
  • Report this scam: If you get one of these, help your fellow seniors by reporting it at https://oig.ssa.gov and filing a complaint with the FTC.
