Our Golden Rules to Keep Your Computer Running Well

While the internet is full of complicated guides, aggressive sales pitches, and complex technical advice, keeping your PC in tip-top shape comes down to a few simple rules—plus one major warning every computer user should know.

Don’t download a bunch of programs just to try them out.

It’s tempting to grab every cool-looking gadget, converter, or utility you stumble across online. But every program or app you install can leave behind background services, auto-start entries, and temporary files that quietly pile up. Over time, all that digital clutter drags down your computer’s performance. If you do test something out and decide you don’t need it, uninstall it right away!

Be very careful where you download software.

Never click those big, flashing “Download Now” buttons on web pages or in random search engine results! Always download software directly from the developer’s official website, or stick to legitimate, time-tested software archives like SnapFiles or MajorGeeks. These trusted sites vet their downloads so you don’t end up with bundled PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), browser hijackers, or malware.

Leave those drivers alone!

If your display, sound, printer, and Wi-Fi are working fine, leave your drivers alone. You do not need to hunt down “newer” drivers just for the sake of having them. And above all else: NEVER install a “Driver Updater” program. Driver updaters are absolute poison for your PC. They frequently install wrong, corrupted, or unstable drivers that can break your system or cause endless blue-screen crashes.

Let Windows Update handle your routine drivers automatically, and only touch a driver manually if a specific piece of hardware stops working. And if you have to manually update a driver, do so by downloading the driver directly from the hardware device’s manufacturer’s website.

Beware the “One-Click Fix”!

You’ve probably seen the ads or pop-ups promising to “Fix 1,402 errors and double your PC speed with just ONE CLICK!”

Take it from us: You cannot fix major computer problems with a single click.

At best, those “one-click optimization” and/or “one-click fix” miracle programs are just digital snake oil that put on a fancy show without doing anything useful. At worst, they aggressively delete critical Windows system files or registry entries, causing far more harm than good. Real maintenance takes a little bit of time and a tiny bit of care. You cannot fix major computer problems or speed up your computer with a magic wand.
