Open Almost Any Document Type With This Cool Browser Extension

By | July 20, 2012

One of the most often asked questions is: “How do I open a ______ (fill in the blank) file?” different kinds of documents. By default, most browsers can’t open files like pdf, odp, doc, ppt, odt, rtf (and many others). So you have to download them and open them with Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, Open Office, etc.,

With a browser extension called gPDF you can open virtually any document type without downloading it and without installing Office, Adobe, or anything else. gPDF is a browser extension that combine Zoho Viewer and Google Docs Viewer and lets you view almost any kind of document right in your web browser.

gPDF works by linking to RTF, ODT, ODS, ODP, CSV files and opening them with Zoho Viewer. gPDF cerates links to PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT & PPTX files and opens with Google Docs. It means that you no longer need to install separate programs like Adobe Reader, Open Office, Microsoft Office, et. al. to view these kinds of documents.

gPDF is safe to use because it connects to Google Docs Viewer and Zoho Viewer through a secure HTTPS connection, so you don’t have to worry about exploits — like the kind that have dogged Adobe for so long.

Documents open very fast too, there’s no downloading documents to your computer. If you have a Google Docs account (and you do if you have Gmail account) or a Zoho account, you’ll be able to edit and save the documents too.

So you don’t have to worry anymore about how to open that document. You don’t have to worry about installing a huge office program. Now you can open virtually any Office document or PDF file right from your browser with the gPDF extension.

You can read more about and/or download the gPDF extension hereΒ http://blog.arpitnext.com/gpdfΒ  — beware the ads. There are separate download links for each browser at the bottom of the page.

gPDF is available for Firefox, Chrome and Opera. If you use IE — you’re out of luck. Of course, Chrome, Firefox and Opera are all free — so you have the option of installing one of those browsers and take advantage of the power of the gPDF extension.

Wow! Was I ever excited when I read the title to this page as I have been searching for a way to open all my .sdw files that I used to be able to open with Open Office. But it seems this extension is for only online stuff.

PLEASE, can anyone help with my problem? I have umpteen recipes saved as .sdw and sure would like to access them.

      Thank you for trying πŸ˜‰

I have had Open Office installed and in use on my computer ever since my first Windows pc -that had Star Office and where all the .swd files were created- was replaced for a pc that could hold more memory.

I was able to access those files through many upgrades of OO but realized in the past year or more that this was no longer happening.

      Still looking for a solution…

I tried this one and ended up having to start all over again on formatting my main drive and do a virgin reinstall of Windows XP. I don’t know if I screwed up and allowed one of the add on programs to install, but all I know after I installed this program I lost 50% of accessibility to my system. Not able to access Help and Support for gaining access to Restoring my system. Reimage was even unable to get my system restore functions back, and that was after 2 separate attempts. They found through Malwarebyte, 5 defects. Even after cleaning which I had recently done before installing this program and had no defects. Well now after reformat and reinstall of Windows XP and reinstalling all my software I am back up. I immediately removed the PDF Creator program from my system. I will not install any software that has those hidden software addons again.

Just thought I pass this on.

Here we are many moons later and I FINALLY have a solution to getting into my .sdw files. Came about totally by accident but “Hurray!” it works. I have not tried in any email client except gmail so can’t speak for others.

I emailed all my .sdw files to myself to open in my laptop which now has Ubuntu OS which used to open these files (newer version do not, sadly, so that was no use to me.) However, looking at the attachments in my email, lo and behold I could read the text. So, I am in the process – a bit tedious, but effective – of copying/pasting all of my recipes via Libre Office.

    Happy me! πŸ˜‰
