A Free Office Suite Fit for a King – A Cloudeight Freeware Pick

There is nothing so wonderful as finding a wonderful software program that has a free version that does what it says it does. And there is nothing nicer than to have one of our readers (Thank you, Pam!) send us a wonderful suggestion to feature a wonderful freeware program. I’m in a wonderful mood. Can you tell? It’s wonderful I tells ya!

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time there were two giant office suites – Microsoft Office, and I’m sorry, I can’t remember the other one. Well, I’m getting old, you know. And big old MS Office ate the other one alive and so now I can’t even remember its name. See? Shame on big, bad Microsoft Office. Anyway now there are many office suites – Microsoft Office still being the big, bad giant. But giants are not often free. No they’re not. Not even the Jolly Green Giant is free. Have you bought a can of Green Giant green beans lately? Did you get it free? I didn’t think so!

And most of you know about Oxygen Office. Open Office, Star Office, and the most of the other free office suites. And some of you know about the free cloud-based, free office suites, like Zoho. But most of you (including us) have probably never heard of the Kingsoft Office Suite.

Now i went to their site with much trepidation. I was afraid their slogan was going to be “An Office Suite Fit For A King”. If it had been I’d have left in disgust – there would have been no freeware pick of the week this week. But they didn’t have a slogan that I could see. So getting back to Kingsoft Office suite: Everyone knows kings have tons of money, women, gold, and whatnot. We all know that no king worth his kingdom would ever be caught dead using a free office suite That’s a fact. And I know that you’re getting really tired of my wondering dialog. And that’s a fact too!

Luckily for you, our software developed Amos E. Kingsoft (I’m just joshing) is almost as verbose as I.  But unlike me, he seems to adhere to the topic at hand which is still, I think (scratching my head), our freeware pick of the week. So without further fanfare or trumpets sounding, I, your wonderful court jester will bow out and turn it over to Mr. Amos E. Kingsoft, Esquire.

The throne is yours, Mr. Kingsoft!

Perhaps the Office Suite you couldn’t remember was Word Perfect? I think Corel still owns it?

Anyway Kingsoft Office Suite looks interesting enough to try. Thanks for the tip. Wish one of these free downloadable office suites would include a good basic database.

I just have a question. In your opinion, which is better, Kingsoft Office Suite or OpenOffice.org? Please advise. I love reading your articles and your newsletter! Keep up the great work!

Neither one is Microsoft Office. But I’m really not impressed with OpenOffice – it’s very bloated and heavy feeling. I prefer Kingsoft Office. It’s friskier and it is a much smaller download.

If I send a document in Kingsoft office suite to someone who has MS office, will they be able to read it? If not is there a free Office or Word that would be reverse compatible?

That’s what they say. I have not “sent” any documents to anyone – but I’ve opened Kingsoft docs in MS Office. And of course — it works both ways.
