An Easy Way to Copy & Paste and Remove the Text Formatting

Or How to Paste Plain Text Only

Copy & paste is probably one of the most often-used features of computing. It works in all operating systems including Windows, Mac, Android, IoS, and Linux. In Windows, we use the shortcut Ctrl+c to copy and Ctrl+v to paste.

But do you know the Ctrl+Shift+v shortcut?

Here’s a very simple trick that I’d forgotten over the years that works great and is very useful if you copy things from websites and paste them into emails or social media posts to share with others.

Below are two samples that I copied from an article that appears on the Popular Mechanics website.

For  “Example #1”,  I copied part of the Popular Mechanics article and pasted it here using the  Ctrl+v shortcut to paste it into this post.

For “Example #2”, I copied the same part of the Popular Mechanics article and pasted it here using the Ctrl+Shift+v shortcut.

If true, we started out as a “baby universe.” Cute.

  • Avi Loeb, astronomy’s resident bad boy, suggests the universe may have been created in a laboratory.
  • Our supposed creators, Loeb writes in an op-ed published in Scientific American last year, may have developed the technology needed to construct “baby universes” capable of producing life.
  • He also introduces a new classification system for advanced civilizations.

Could our universe have been created in a petri dish? Avi Loeb seems to think so. The Harvard astronomer posits that a higher “class” of civilization may have conjured up our universe in a laboratory far, far away.

Ctrl+Shift+v removes the text formatting and pastes plain text only

If you’re composing an email in Gmail or you’re posting something on a social media site and you only want to paste text without formatting, try using the Ctrl+Shift+v shortcut to paste it into your email or social media post.

Strange…doesnt work for me. Ctl V works as it should, but Ctl Shft V doesn’t even paste anything. So I am still forced to use the old fashioned right click and select the paste option desired. Too bad. Always enjoy finding new shortcuts but they must work.

it does not work in all programs. It works in Gmail on the web. It may not work in your Email program on your computer or other programs on your computer. It works on some social media sites, it works in Gmail (Webmail) it works on Outlook.com, and it works in WordPad but it does not work in certain programs and programs that already have a “Paste as plain text option such as newer versions of MS Word.
