On the heels of cleaning up the mess from earlier patch horrors, Microsoft finds itself under criticsm for seriously bothing another patch, labeled as “critical” by the Microsoft Windows update team.

Here are the details from our source:

“Microsoft hasn’t yet acknowledged Win7 patch KB 2803821 and WinXP patch KB 2834904, which have spawned complaints about top half of videos displaying in black

Another botched Windows patch: MS13-057/KB 2803821/KB 2834904
It looks like this week’s Black Tuesday patches include at least one real stinker: MS 13-057/KB 2803821 has been blamed for problems with recent editions of several products. Until Microsoft pulls the patch — or acknowledges the problem — I advise against installing it.

MS 13-057/KB 2803821 is billed as a “security update for Windows Media Format Runtime 9 and 9.5 (wmvdmod.dll), and for Windows Media Player 11 and 12.” Microsoft rates the patch as ‘critical’…”

I have already downloaded the /KB2803821.
    Do you advise uninstalling it?
I never seem to trust those heavy updates any more. When they suddenly show up with 18 critical updates I hold my breath and panic. You always have in the back of your mind: what are they really going to do to my machine?

In view of the frequency of horrific problems, I changed my Windows update process on both my computers. I no longer can trust microsoft’s “automatic update” and switched to “ask me before downloading……” Now I wait for however long it takes for C8 or the tech articles to identify and publish warnings like this one.

As I now look at the list of available updates they send me, I would like to know why some of the updates for my Win7 laptop computer, include updates for XP?

I haven’t noticed the above problem yet but am on W 8.1 Pro. When I get back to W 7 SP 1, I will check further.

I just sent this to MS and earlier to Windows Secret:

Bug Report: W 7 SP 1 Patch KB 2835361 Causes MS APIs and Services to Crash!

    Hi Folks,

I know some have had problems with Patch, KB 2835361, so I would like to share my experience from Friday. I spent most of the day trying to put it in, in different combinations and removing it, as well as doing malware scans to no avail.

    One important note:

Just uninstalling the/or all Patch Tuesdays Patches does NOT rectify the problems it causes with MS APIs and/or Services. One must actually do a Restore to remove any settings that it corrupts. Restoring on just this Patch, providing it is the Last one does, however. I have reinstalled the patches that I had put in with the troublesome patch.

What does it Break for me:

From what I discovered there are three MS APIs; Sidebar, Microsoft Management Console (MMC), Internet Explorer(IE).
In my experience, one just had try to open them and they would crash and send numerous Bug Reports to Microsoft.

From what I understand, this Patch is supposed to be about True Fonts and Document Sharing concerns and it must be affecting things fairly deep to have the cause and effects that I am having. We have seen these types of Patches to be problematic in the past but this is my first time of having crashes of other APIs around Font Patches.

I am putting KB 2835361 on long term HOLD, until we have a Patch that fixes the problem or another solution.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Is anyone going to address whether these should be unistalled if already downloaded?

after hours and hours of troubleshooting why some of the software i bought were showing nothing but black screen i finally found out it was the Windows update KB2803821 causing the catastrophe, uninstalling it fixes the issue but it will re-install itself every time you update your MS essentials.

microsoft should remove this off the update list until its fixed
