Clearing Up a Couple of Things About Windows 10

About Your Music

Many of you read our article “Windows 10 Giveth and Windows 10  Taketh Away” and came away with the idea that you won’t be able to play your music files on Windows 10 unless you download some 3rd-party program. This isn’t true…the article said you will need to download a 3rd-party program (like VLC Player) to play DVDs.

And now it appears that even this information was only partly correct.

There will be a Windows Media Player in Windows 10 but it will only play music not video.  Now Darcy, pointed out to me that Windows 10 has a video app Videos. Right now it’s called XBox Video. It will not be called XBox Video by the time Microsoft releases Windows 10. I see where it will play your personal videos and where you can download movies and TV  shows but I sure don’t see where you can play DVDs with it.  We’ll see. We’ve included screenshots of  the video app in this article.** Your music libraries and your music files, such as MP3 and WMA files, will play just fine in Windows 10 without downloading any programs or apps. And it appears despite all the press about the lack of a complete media player in Windows 10, you’ll have a video app you can use to watch TV ,buy/rent movies or play your own move collections.  Stay tuned for more.

Windows Media Player in Windows 10 will not play DVDs, but it will play your music files just fine. Here are a couple of screenshots showing an MP3 file playing on Windows 10

Play your personal video files too. But I don’t see any sign of playing movies on DVD with his player.

We hope this eases your mind about playing music on Windows 10 – all of you who enjoy listening to music on  your computer will have no problem listening to music on Windows 10. And you’ll be able to play videos too. Whether or not you’ll be able to play DVDs, is another question.

Will My Favorite Programs Run on Windows 10?

We’ve had dozens of questions asking if X Y Z program will run on Windows 10. And the answer is simple – if a program runs of Windows 7 and/or Windows 8, it will run just fine on Windows 10.

I’ve been using Windows 10 since the first preview was released and I’ve yet to find one program that runs on my Windows 7 program that will not run on Windows 10. So, if you’re using Windows 7 or Windows 8x right now and your favorite programs are working for you now, they’ll work for you on Windows 10. So relax!

Thank you for clearing that up because I was one of those that jumped to the wrong conclusion and assumed my music would no longer play if I upgraded to Windows 10. I’ve been sending along the updates as you’ve been putting them out there to friends and family….so now I can let them know that going with Windows 10 won’t affect listening to their music.

I am still not sure that I’ll be upgrading to 10, I sort of like to let these things be out there for awhile and see how they go first. And I’m glad for that because otherwise I’d have 8! I’ve had 7 for several years and I STILL miss my XP! I hated Vista, my laptop is a Vista. I’m in need of a new one and decided to wait until 10 comes out to get one. No sense trying to learn 8 for a month and then upgrade to 10. I’ll learn it on the laptop and if all goes well, then I might switch over on the desktop. That’s my thinking anyway.

BTW, you guys are really great and very helpful…..have been with you before you even had the Premium Newsletter.

    Thanks again…..pb

The longer I have win/7 the more I miss my XP . Say what you want but it was the best and everything worked . No lousy downloads to mess up computers . Hoping micro-soft takes a nice long walk off of a very short pier . Win/7 will be my very last computer . Don’t know about the rest of you but if people quit buying computers maybe micro-soft would listen but as long as you buy they are going to keep shoving them out whether they are ready or not . The only reason win/10 is going free is that is the only way they are going to be able to market them since they have had 3 failers in a row and 4 if you want to count win/7 . Hate it !!!!!!!!! Hate it!!!!!!!!!

    To Charlene,
If it weren’t for Microsoft you would not even have access to Windows XP. Personally I have enjoyed using Windows XP, Windows 7, 8, and in particular the inside preview of Windows 10.

There will always be changes, some for the worse, I agree, but also for the better.

MJP you are joking of course !!!!!!!!!!! It was Bill Gates not microsoft that gave us XP . I did have the preview of win/10 on my computer and it’s crap and ended wiping the disk and reinstalling win/7 . Not everything works like we are being told . Can’t log into g-mail unless you have chrome installed . Never had to before and won’t have it now . My animation programs won’t work on win/10 nore will my micro-soft office progam .

You got it Toyota . You can thank micro-soft for Vista , win8 , win8.1 and win/7 . Gates was working on Vista when he decided to step down from micro-soft . Micro-soft jumped the gun and put it out before it was ready and there were so many problems that is the reason they came out with 8 and 8.1 was to try and straighten out the mess and we all know how that turned out . If I remember right that is the reason for win/7 was to correct the 3 wrongs . When win/7 came out micro-soft put out some pretty bad security dowloads that caused alot of people computer problems and I for 1 was one of those people . Maybe if Gates hadn’t left mico-soft things would have be different . Gates was to micro-soft that Steve Jilles was to apple . Got the picture now ?
The only good thing I can say about the Dell win/7 computer that I have is the Dell Data Safe program and an image retore disk that I had made . I was able to reinstall all programs I had put on my computer and it took about 30 min from start to finish . Sure glad I had them after installing the win/10 preview .

Actually your chronology is wrong. Microsoft didn’t release Windows 8 to fix what was wrong with Windows Vista. Microsoft followed Vista – a disaster – with Windows 7 – a success (your personal opinion aside). The Microsoft release Windows 8 and tried to fix that blunder with Windows 8.1. Then MS decided to skip Windows 9 altogether – to apparently distance Windows 10 from Windows 8x. It seems Microsoft has a history of alternating good versions of Windows with bad starting with Windows 98SE (SE=Second Edition)

            Windows 98 SE – Good
            Windows ME – poor
            Windows XP – Good
            Windows Vista- poor
            Windows 7 – Good
            Windows 8x – poor
            Windows 10 – Good

Of course there are people who loved Windows ME, Windows Vista, and Windows 8x – but generally these are considered Windows flops, while Windows 98SE, Windows XP, and Windows 7 are considered hits. We think Windows 10 will be a hit – that does not mean everyone is going to like it.

Sorry to upset the apple cart, but Microsoft was formed on April 4 1975 and Windows XP was released on October 25 2001.
There for Windows XP was a Microsoft product.

According to Microsoft (an borne out by our testing of Windows 10) MS Office and all its programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) will be working and available after you upgrade to Windows 10.

Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail and other Web mail programs are not affected by what you do on your computer. You can access your web mail on any internet connected device using Linux, Android, Apple or Windows operating systems.

Windows Mail would need to be reinstalled on Windows 10 after you upgraded. The good news is: Windows Mail works on Windows 10.

You do NOT have to find a program to play DVD’s on Windows 10. This is direct from Microsoft info page for Windows 10:
Will Windows Media Center be available in Windows 10?
Windows Media Center is not part of Windows 10 and won’t be available after upgrading to Windows 10. If you use Windows Media Center, we will alert you during upgrade that Windows Media Center is not available on Windows 10. We know that some users use Windows Media Center to play DVDs, and we are providing a free DVD playback app in Windows 10 for Windows Media Center users.

You both have answered some of my questions. I was concerned about my programs, didn’t want to have to go through that again. The only gagedts I have is a clock. It is a bigger one that is on taskbar. I likely will find other one on the Internet. What concerns me is my e-mail. Will I lose all my contacts and my Address? I sure would be upset if that happened. I am using now Internet Explorer 11. I have Windows 7 Premium and the Computer is on only about 14 months young. Thanks for being the people you are. Helping so many in need. I await your Newsletter on Fridays.
    Thanks Again

I also don’t think I would be putting in Windows 10 until all the bugs are out of it. I also have a tiny problem with downloading the Windows 10. I’m on DSL and I know a program that size will take forever. So giving it some serious thought. Would like to know tho if I put Windows 10 in would I beable to still have Windows 7 put back in if I didn’t like Windows 10?

As long as you upgrade to Windows 10 by July 2016 it will be free (for Win 7 and Win 8 users). Officially the answer to your question can you go back to Windows 7 after installing Windows 10 will be “No” – but some slick techie will probably figure out a way. However, no one has seen the final version of Windows 10 yet, it’s still a few weeks away and the pre-release version is still really not complete.

On another note, if you purchased your computer with Windows 7 on it, you have a recovery partition put there by the manufacturer – meaning you could always use that to return your computer to its factory state – with Windows 7, of course, you’d lose everything you did not backup.

Once I got a 3rd party start button I never had a problem with Win 8.1. Actually I’m very happy with Win 8.1, don’t understand all the bashing of Win 8.1 & WLM. It does everything I want it to do for me. Took me awhile getting used to it, after using Win XP for so many years. I still make and use stationary too. There are work arounds to get it to work, but others already new how, and that’s how I learned. Very easy to use. So actually I did not loose anything when I went to Win 8.1. I plan to upgrade to Win 10. I think if I can go from Win XP to Win 8.1, which is a big jump, I can learn Win 10. The question I have is weather my WLM account will be replaced again with Outlook Mail? If that happens and I can’t go back to WLM that is make me unhappy. I had Outlook when I got this Win 10 and my server put WLM on this computer and set it up for me. I have my copy of Win 10 reserved. Plan to update as soon as it shows up on my computer. If I have any problems there is always answers from Cloudeight Newsletter, Ten Forums, and my local computer shop to get answers from.

A 3rd-party start button should never have been necessary and even with the start button Windows 8.x doesn’t run well for many – it was like Vista. Vista never felt finished – though some people liked Vista. Some people liked Windows 8x, but more didn’t. It was only because of Microsoft’s Apple-envy that you needed to install a start button – MS tried to turn Windows into iPad. MS made a huge mistake with Windows 8.x – that’s why there is no Windows 9 – they wanted to distance Windows 10 from Windows 8x.

If you like Windows 8x it’s great. Not many do. It’s a matter of personal preference. I still use Windows 7; I didn’t find a 3rd-party start button fixed much of what I didn’t like about Windows 8x. I have a Windows 8x computer I rarely use – I got it to learn Windows 8x but use Windows 7 by choice.

There is a big problem for those of us who take online classes and download mp3 audio files to play back later when we have time for the audio classes. EDGE DOES NOT DOWNLOAD MP3 files it just plays them with no way I found to save them. The class PDF files you have to left click on bnring up and then right click on the actual pdf to save as. If you try right clicking on the link to the pdf file you get choic es that don’t allow save as.

Hmmm…Edge downloads Chrome, Firefox and/or Opera and all of them download MP3s. You’re not stuck with Edge in Windows 10. I haven’t seen it since I downloaded Chrome with in on the first day I had Windows 10. And Internet Explorer is still in Windows 10 and that download MP3s. Windows Key+ R type IEXPLORE.EXE and press Enter. Internet Explorer will open.
