1) MRG Effitas Time to Detect Assessment Q2 & Q3 2013

The MRG Effitas “Time to Detect Assessment” examines which antivirus products are able to prevent infections of 300 brand new malware samples as well as the time to accomplish a 100% detection rate within a 24 hour period. 275 of the attempts to infect the system were performed using live URLs via Internet Explorer and 25 via a USB stick.

I must not be running Emsisoft properly & I can’t find much help. Ever since I installed Emsisoft I get so many popup warnings I don’t know which to allow or not & many times it has stopped a website from running. Also, since I installed it when I run I SUPERantiSpyware, SUPERaS finds many many many more tracking cookies than before. I thought Emsisoft was supposed to find these. Why do I now have even more?

First, we applaud Emsisoft for not bothering with tracking cookies. If we have written this once, we have written this a thousand times — Tracking Cookies is a name invented by sales and marketing — as a way to scare people and assure that their security programs would always find something so people would think these security programs were working — but tracking cookies are plain text files — they don’t track you all over the web. They are not viruses, they are not malware, there are text files — like any other cookie. All cookies are tracking cookies if you really want to get technical. Those who worry about cookies are only being duped by companies which are selling security software. So when Norton and McAfee started detecting tracking cookies (years ago) all the others started doing it too. They didn’t want people saying something like – WOW Norton detected 1081 tracking cookies – but brand B didn’t detect a thing.

You really want Emsisoft to find and remove tracking cookies? SUPERAntiSpyware has a setting where you can turn that nuisance off — tracking cookies are text files. They can’t execute or ” run “. They don’t phone home, they don’t do anything but tell the site they came from that you’ve been there before. And you don’t need a program to remove cookies — you can clear your browser’s cache and temp Internet files. To remove most of them — or use a cleanup program like CCleaner or any of the dozens of others out there. Cookies are junk files, but they’re not dangerous.

We applaud Emsisoft for not stooping to the level of detecting tracking cookies. That would be a waste.

Now about you statement — you can’t much help:

#1. Emsisoft has great support — so I don’t have a clue what you mean by “I can’t get much help”.

#2. Did you read through the documentation? Tutorials? Did you look at help? FAQ?

#3. What kinds of things are you downloading? What kinds of sites are you visiting. A lot of free programs come bundled with malware — are you sure what you’re downloading isn’t bundled? Are you positively sure the sites you’re visiting are safe.

We have been using Emsisoft since June and I spend a lot of time installing and testing software, and I’m not getting constant warnings. And rarely do I get a warning for a Web site — and if I do it’s generally blocking an ad code and not the entire site. I have never seen it prevent me from viewing a site…so what kinds of sites are you visiting that Emsisoft is blocking them. Are you sure you want to visit those sites?

Finally, if you’re not sure, google it. Type name or the site in Google and see what the general consensus is — Emsisoft does not miss much nor does it have a high rate of false positives.

I get three newsletters; yours, Bob Rankin and Ask Leo. I don’t read Ask Leo much anymore because of the fact that he’s still recommending MSE, in fact stated he’s still using it. I would like your input on something I just read in my Bob Rankin newsletter. He was apparently using AVG, which he just quit in favor of Avast. He goes on quite strongly to rave about Avast.

Thing is, I just quit my (paid) Avast on 3 computers before it was even expired to go with Emsisoft. I’m not sorry because I felt that Avast was really starting to slow my systems down, and even causing some other performance woes. I’d just like your comment on this very high recommendation for Avast.
