Latest Windows 10’s Cumulative Updates are Causing Big Problems with Some Printers

NOTE: The updates referred to in this article are cumulative updates, not the May 2020 Update (version 2004) update.

Last Tuesday, Windows 10 users’ received monthly security patches. But it seems that the recently issued cumulative updates are causing big problems with printers.

The ‘Patch Tuesday’ updates released earlier last week that are causing serious problems with printers are KB4557957 and KB4560960 which were released to Windows 10 users who are running Windows 10 May 2020 update (version 2004) or the November 2019 (version 1909) which are for the May 2020 Update and the November 2019 Update

These cumulative updates are proving troublesome for some printers according to reports on Reddit, and various other online forums including Microsoft’s own Answers.com support site. The problems are occurring across a wide variety of printer brands including Brother, Canon, HP, Panasonic, Ricoh, Toshiba, and others.

According to a Microsoft “VIP”, uninstalling the KB4557957 and KB4560960 updates fixes the printer problem, but also removes the security patches included in them.

Uninstalling the updates does not prevent the same updates from reinstalling. See our article here to learn how to prevent troublesome Windows updates from reinstalling. This article covers not only removing troublesome updates but also hiding them so they won’t automatically reinstall. If you choose to attempt to reinstall the updates at a later date (for instance after Microsoft has fixed them) you can “unhide” them.

Read this Microsoft document for more details on known issues with the KB4557957 and the KB4560960 updates

Hopefully, these printer hobgoblins should be fixed with the next update. In the meantime, if you’re one of those whose printers do not work after the KB4557957 and KB4560960 updates. you’ll have to carry on without the latest security patches.

Do you know what kind of problems? My Canon TS 3100 series started printing second copies at random, and I’m not sure what has caused this to happen. I don’t really want to uninstall the updates if they aren’t posing this particular problem.

    Thanks.

I had an important document that needed to be printed, and my Canon printer wasn’t working. If it wasn’t for your alert, I would have been tearing out my hair trying to figure out what was wrong. I followed your instructions on how to uninstall the -960 update, and I was able to use my printer again. You saved the day! Nobody does what you do. Thanks so much!!
