Windows 10 Updates – A Problem for You?

Windows 10 Updates – A Problem for You?

Most of us know that Windows updates are necessary to keep our computers safe, or at least safer. In Windows 7 the biggest problem with updates was just getting them, but those who could get them rarely had any problems with them.

Windows 10 updates seem to be causing quite a few people problems. Some people have no problems, others have minor problems and a few have major problems.

One of the reasons for the increase in the number of problems reported by Windows 10 users is that Windows 10 is (supposedly) the last named/numbered version of Windows. (There will be no Windows 11 or Windows 12 – although we can see right now that while Microsoft just wants to use Windows, users need to name things…for instance Windows 10 Redstone AKA Windows 10 Anniversary Edition.) So any upgrades to Windows 10 – or even new versions of Windows – will be delivered to users via Windows Update.  So, it stands to reason that some of the updates, especially major operating system upgrades are going to cause some problems for some users.

Today we want to ask all of you who use Windows 10, if you have had any problems with any of the updates so far. We would like you to cast your vote in our poll and let us know.

Have you had any problems with Windows 10 updates?

Oh my gosh, terrible, terrible problems!
Had to redo 4 computers, and one had to be wiped and reinstalled!
Even the graphic drivers were wiped out!
Am in fear every time an update says “restart to install updates”!!!
    Turn it OFF already Microsoft!!!
Is it me, or are computers running Win 10 Home targeted?
Seems like computers running Win 10 Pro and up have no problems.
    Was nearly in tears…

I hadn’t thought about it, but it does seem as if the Home version of Windows 10 has had more update problems than other versions. It’s also more difficult to turn off updates in the home version. I’m sorry you’ve had such terrible update woes, Kat. I had some difficult problems that took a lot of time to fix, but I didn’t have to do a fresh install. Now I flinch when anything on my system installs updates.

I’m sorry that I couldn’t choose more than one response on the poll. I put accurately that I’ve had major problems with Windows 10 updates (more than once) but had no way to express the arrogant, demeaning way those of us with an SSD OS drive and an HDD data drive who had extreme problems with the so-called Anniversary update were treated by a moderator on the Microsoft forums. I’ve had problems that weren’t major with updates as well. I also couldn’t choose that I am geeky enough to know how to stop updates, which I have done in self defense. I fear MS’s sloppy work more than the work of the bad guys, and I trust Emsisoft far more than I ever will MS, from which no security software can offer any sort of protection.

I have been having trouble with Outlook.com update for some reason none the changes mentioned in the email I go about Outlook have taken; other than that all the other updates have been ok.

I will check the box on knowing how to turn off update, although I am very far from being a geek, only an average user that is willing to read & learn. With the Pro version & help from a small program, my last update was 12-21-15 (they don’t all seem to be listed in one place).

I recently downloaded the cumulative version, but have not tried the install. I don’t currently have the time to redo everything if it causes problems. I have my computer set up to look like the XP Classic & suspect it may have to be redone. With the help of Emsisoft & caution I have had NO trouble all year. I agree with Brenda on trusting Emsisoft more than Microsoft, although I do realize that Emsisoft probably can not protect some operating system variables.

Emsisoft has nothing to do with Windows updates and allows them to do their thing, just as it should. However, my comment earlier is not the only one from people who have had their computers suffer major problems from Windows updates. Some of us have turned updates off while others have chosen to stay with an OS that will have no update problems, XP , and we feel safer with Emsisoft’s protection from the underbelly of the internet than with taking more chances with Windows updates.

Screen message one morning “we have upgraded windows 10, don’t worry everything is fine” (or some such)
Everything was fine…nothing was there! I have office 365; Microsoft helped for reinstalling, and thank goodness
for Carbonite, they were a great help; Outlook has never worked properly since; Microsoft is not helpful with that as they want users to go to their Mail system, and I don’t want to do so. Am not a “happy camper” Other irritations include that Microsoft eliminated the scan feature which allowed users to scan documents, photos, etc., directly into publisher, or word, or Picasa, offering instead a convoluted process which is utterly ridiculous and certainly doesn’t work for my purposes. The company said it was too difficult to program and carry that feature over to Office 365..duh? Isn’t programming their basic business?

The update a couple of nights ago was the only one I’ve ever had any problems with. This was the anniversary edition of Windows 10.

I do stationery. Have lost WM, WLM is acting stupid so I paid to have OE for windows 10. OE survived all the updates except the last one and it completely vanished and left me with no address book so lost all my contacts, and important emails I had save in my Drafts folder……gone. grrr Also lost all my Cloudeight info sheets from way back. That really hurt.

After the Windows 10 Anniversary update I have had problems. If my computer is restarted I get a black screen with a circle of dots that justs sits there and spins. I have to keep turning my computer off and on , off and on till I get lucky and it starts. I went to Microsoft and had someone there try and fix it, she couldn’t, told me to take it and get it looked at and fixed. Well I have been sick and unable to take it in to be fixed. My computer ran fine till that update and now I am worried that I may ruin my Computer by turning it on and off. I know enough to keep my computer healthy but am not tech savy. If I knew this was going to happen I would have just stayed with windows 7.

I had the same thing happen to me. Mine updated in the night and was still a black screen with spinning dots for hours so finally shut it down for an hour and restarted. It said it was doing updates and not to shut it off and that the computer would be shutting off and restarting till they were done. It did the same thing on my laptop in August but I never had to shut it down. I am also looking into OE Classic which is a replacement for outlook express by Microsoft, just waiting for a response from TC before I install it.

The problem I have with the updates is that each time Window 10 updates, I have to have my Windows Mail reinstalled at a cost of Ten Dollars; no problem is you are not on a fixed income. Decided to give in and use the Thunderbird email program (good or not good I do not know). I loved my Windows Mail program and the former outlook email program. Oh well, changes. Thank you for letting me vent.

The only problem I have had with Windows 10 up-dates is the horrendous Anniversary up-date, I had to do a system restore to get my computer back to running properly, needless to day I have since blocked that particular update…

Ever since the Windows 10 update, my all-in-one pc will no longer recognize my headset. I like to use this, so I can listen to my music, and not disturb anyone.

My husband purchased a brand new pc with Windows 10. After the update, he no longer has any sound. I’m a garage geek, but, I’m still not able to get sound on his pc.

I haven’t tried a restore, but may have to do so.

I have a Win10 laptop that used up nearly 10GB of our very expensive Data, we have an allocation of 10GB per month, so we had to pay extra for the OOB. Then I read your Cloud Eight newsletter in which you explained how to stop downloads using Command Prompt to STOP WUAUSERV and BITS, the only problem is they sneak back and start downloading again. So now I just minimise the command prompt window and if I see a download in progress on Networx, which sits permanently on top of my screen, I call up the command prompt and stop whatever is downloading, though sometimes it cannot be stopped, in which case I unplug the cable from the router. THAT stops it!!

I have not had any major problems, just though I had a ghost in their for while but now I know better! It took away My Classic Shell but Darcy gave me a link to download and now that’s fine. It took away my Windows mail but T.C. installed Thunderbird on my PC and now it is fine so I am all set. Thanks,

    Hi,
Maybe Microsoft will— one day— get it right!!!—Windows 10—that is!!
I’m glad I decided to stay with Win 7—as it serves me very well!
Yes, I put Windows 10 on a laptop, i7 series system and my slot load disk drive did not work properly—you guessed it—that was enough of Win 10 for me. I did try up dating drivers for same etc— but there wasn’t any??
I will just wait and see regards Win 10??!!
    LOL, Jeff

Not only did I have problems, but I spent 6 (yes, that’s six) hours on the phone with a Microsoft advanced tech in India. He eventually reloaded Windows 10 at the 5 1/2 hour. By hour 6, I was back up & running. He was diligent, bur, really?!? He also recommended that I turn off the Windows automatic updates or we might have to do this again. YIKES!

Windows 10 update creates a restore point before updating. If you have problems with the update just unrestore the update and you are back to the starting point before the update. Just make sure to hide the problem update to keep it from re-installing.

Windows 10 is a bloody nightmare for the average computer user. It would not allow me to fill out documents.
It kept changing my printer and nearly drove me mad.
Microsoft should hang their head in shame for marketing such troublesome software.
I’m in my 80’s so won’t have put up with this frustrating problem much longer.
    Thank God.

Do Microsoft people dislike Australians. Several people I know, and family have almost committed suicide due to Windows 10 ruining important operations by freezing, BSOD and other problems.
I junked my ‘perfectly running ‘HP lap-top after endless frustration with Windows 10, I reverted my wife’s Toshiba lap-top to Windows 7 after sorting through the un-necessary changes creating a new learning curve for her which continually triggered the, “What ‘s happened with this ………” scenario.
My desk-top PC I reverted to Windows 7 after weeks of trying to ‘love’ Windows 10 which I disliked from the beginning did not improve, and the yucky, flat sliders and icons belong in a pyramid with the other hieroglyphics.
Something has to be seriously wrong with a computer operating system which fails after updates which or supposed to improve the OS, not throw a ‘spanner in the works’.
My Windows 7 also has a perfect clone of Outlook Express, OE Classic, Made In The USA.

The anniversary one would not recognize my Nvidia video card the first 2 times I tried, but worked the third time after I noticed a fix they incorporated. Since then some of the larger updates to the system would not let my computer reboot and had to shut down with the power button sometimes a couple of times. After it finally booted up I would run the registry organizer and everything would work OK. This does seem to continually happen with the system updates and am forced to do the same thing to fix the problem. Thank goodness for the registry organizer being able to fix the problem at the time.

Win 1o Anniversary Upgrade killed my computers’ connection to my home server (essentials 2012R2). The upgraded machines could no longer check in fully to the server. I had to restore 3 computers from backups. I have turned off this update and have not wanted to try it again, but see that I will have to try again some day. Hopefully they have fixed this issue.

Microsoft has been warning users of Windows Live Mail for almost a year now that Windows Live Mail (part of Windows Live Essentials) is not going to be supported by Microsoft after January 2017 – and that Microsoft accounts will not work in Windows Live Mail starting in June of this year (4+ months ago). You cannot use any accounts with Windows Live Mail that is a Microsoft address i.e. @hotmail.com, @outlook.com, @live.com, @live.ca, @msn.com

They have been gradually phasing these out since June and by January 2017 no one using Windows Live Mail will be able to access any Microsoft accounts.

For the past 4 days I have been on Microsoft support, sometime 2/3 hours sometime 4/5 hours and they still havene’t sorted out problems caused by Anniversary download I now cant get my computer on any longer than 10 seconds before it freezes, I am waiting for another call this afternoon. I have had to resort to using grandsons old laptop. Help. What can I do? I shouldn’t have to resort to paying a tech to sort out their problems.

The faster you act after a bad update the more likely you’ll be successful it restoring the previous build of Windows 10 without losing any personal files or programs.

I do not know how long it’s been since you’ve been having problems, but I can tell you that the first thing you should have done is this:

      1. Press Start —>Settings
      2. Click on “Update & Security”
      3. In “Update & Security” click on “Recovery”
      4. In Recovery you should have 3 options “Reset this PC”, “Roll Back to the previous build” and “Advanced startup”

If it has been only a short time, you’ll see “Roll back to the previous build” and it will be clickable. If more time has elapse since the upgrade, you’ll see “Roll back to the previous build” but it won’t be clickable. And if even more time has elapsed, you won’t see the “Roll back…” option at all.

I am really surprised Microsoft didn’t tell you this. Let us know if we can be of any further help.

      Thanks,

      TC

Micro$oft has really been no help regarding the issues I had with the Anniversary update. I couldn’t get passed a black screen and swirling circle. For 3 days, I did a hard restart and was able to log-in. Went to Settings and checked on the Updates-showed that the update was not completed. I got an error #0X80070570 that I tried to research on my Kindle…made a couple more attempts to re-update but didn’t have any luck-still a black screen with swirling circle. I shut it down and unplugged my External hard drive and Printer since it is wireless and low and behold it came up to the log-in screen. Went to the settings and updates and saw that it was 75% complete. I was able to get the update completed. Then the computer did a restart and I again went to the updates to see if there were any further updates listed and sure enough there were 2 for the 1607 version. I clicked and prayed for the best. It started updating and finished in just a couple of seconds and restarted again.
Taking a look around-I am missing some software . I contacted Dell via tech support to see if I could get the software via download–they informed me that my computer is not compatible with MS Win10 and that I would need to go back to Win 8. I felt like someone kicked my in the gut. So does that mean MS and Dell are not communicating and that the updates/versions of Operating Systems will be the end of this computer? I feel as though I have no control of what MS can do to my computer and I am afraid what will happen with the next update….it just a matter of time….

It’s been 2 weeks since the update and I am still experiencing problems. Anytime the computer needs to update and restart, I get the black screen and swirling circle when it comes back up. I have done the hard restart and it will then come up to the log-in screen. My Dell assistant runs a check every few days and it’s telling me there are bad errors and that I need to back everything up as it will crash at some point.

    Simply Frustrating.
