Windows 10 Version 1909 Update Causes Problems With Search

Another Windows update, another botched update? According to TechRadar, many Windows 10 users are reporting that the Windows 10 Version 1909 upgrade breaks the search tool in File Explorer.

Remember, according to Microsoft, Windows 10 Version 1909 (November 2019 Update) was supposed to be a smaller update, more like the old service packs in previous versions of Windows. But, it looks like the update is causing problems for a lot of Windows 10 users. You have to wonder when Microsoft is really going to put some effort into making sure the updates they release don’t cause substantial problems for many users. It seems like every time there’s a Windows update, it causes problems for a significant number of Windows 10 users.

Here’s the scoop from TechRadar:

Microsoft’s bad run of broken Windows 10 updates continues, with the recent November 2019 Update bringing further problems to the search tool in File Explorer – and it’s a problem that still has not been fixed.

File Explorer is a tool in Windows 10 that allows you to browse the files and folders on your hard drive, and it comes with a search box that is supposed to let you quickly and easily find files within drives and folders.

Unfortunately, Microsoft saw fit to tinker with the search box in the Windows 10 November 2019 Update by adding the ability to search your online OneDrive cloud storage as well as your local files.

Is it happening to everyone? Or just some? You don’t mention if you have experienced this problem. If it’s 100% of users, I will hold off on the update, but if it’s only “some” or even “many”, I may take my chances….

As stated in the article “…many Windows 10 users are reporting” this. I have not had any problem and probably the majority of users have not had a problem, enough have had a problem, but many have and that’s why we posted this article. If it does cause a problem you have 10 days to go back to the previous version. But neither Darcy or I have had any problems with Version 1909.

My search is a total disaster. I uploaded “Everything” as per CloudEight and now I can find things once again! I give up trying to fix it in Win 10.

I had been bragging about “File Explorer” how I had liked the way it worked for me and my needs. Now since this update I have to type out the whole word and click search in the box to get the file at times. That may be ok if you remember the name of the file and not just part of it :=( . We may not use some of these files for a long time. My memory is not as good as it used to be…lol.

I’m not sure what triggers this but it is an annoyance.

I now can’t right click in the search box to copy and paste. If you are in a hurry that is nice to have. I think Microsoft is maybe trying to bring that back. I guess we will see.

Right now I have Version 1903. If I install 1909 and have problems how do I go back to 1903? I’m completely new to Windows 10 and don’t want to screw anything up? Thanks for any help.

Hi Nora… I’m not aware of any problems with Version 1909 (it is now 3 months old). Since you’re using Windows 10 V 1903, the upgrade to V 1909 is not a major version upgrade, it’s more like a service pack. However, as with all version updates, you will have 10 days to roll back to the previous version of Windows without losing any files, programs, etc. See our article here.
